tbi runs mega rich all the time
tbi runs mega rich all the time
hey gurus
I am newer member long time lurker first time poster, and although I dont have a f body( actually own a s/10 blazer 4.3) I know this is the most authorative site I have ever been to , with that said heres my dilema, my truck has a 4.3 that I built about 40,000 well maintained miles nothing radical .60 over 9.5 compression moderate gm performance cam 447 single pattern 222 deg. durration 112 centerline stock springs and valve train headers and flowmaster 40, the only modification externally would be clutch fan delete and running v belts for simplicity puposes with aflex fan , well ever since I switched from 1st gen vortec fuel induction to tbi my truck has been running ultra rich. I have replaced everything ,simply cause I build my vehicles to keep, only new parts every thing is new!! checked all the usual suspects , vacuum leaks , all sensor values seem normal within spec, this was all done with a gm shop manual.( no half stepping here) for my truck followed all diagnostic trouble shooting charts still to no avail I have been verry methodical and systematic with my aproach to all this and am truly baffled. I have combed this site for about a yr and am finally breaking down and asking the pros that would be you guys ,
any way here is a list of whats been replaced
fuel tank and pump( bout 3 yrs ago)
all stainless fuel lines from tank to engine bay
all new hoses plumbed to tbi
fresh tbi unit new fpr
new plugs, msd coil ,wires, dist and icm
map seems good
tps is in spec
iac is in spec
new cts
I have good fuel pressure sits at 11 lbs, solid even at wot
have a auto xray 6000 and engine is always in clear flood mode
and o2 is mostly running rich
I could send you a print out of the scan if maybe one of the masters could look it over and maybe shed some light on this for me
what am I missing here?
anyway sorry about the long post just like being specific and giveing as much info as possible
any help would be so much appreciated

You could check,
-for exaust leak near the O2 sensor
-is the calibration for a v6
-if 11psi and injector flow rate are set up correctly in the calibration

Re: tbi runs mega rich all the time
yes its replacement ecm (out of a 90 s.10 4,3 tbi) still does the same thing swapped in the original still the same, although I do have an exhaust leak after the o2 about 16" after , could you possibly take a look at my scan readings ? I'm a pretty good machanic , but honestly diagnostics as far as deciphoring scan readings I am not profficient at I am leaning tward the fact that I have only 15" of vacuum the map is overcompensating and between the fact that I have a flex fan on minus a clutch the engine is never getting up past 180deg. theirefore the compter sees the engine as not up to temp and keeps dumping fuel , I don't know just a and thought , the only thing left that has not been replaced is the ecm harness I know I have a leak after the y pipe cause I took the cat offf to inspect thought it was clogged due to running rich for so long it was only a yr old , just systematicly trying to remove all possibillities but it was doing this long before I ever toched the exhaust system but worth a shot will check and let you know
thanks for the response

Re: tbi runs mega rich all the time
ok rest the iac as per gm procedure , took it out for a test drive runs ok still super rich. tps voltage is at .54 with the scanner hooked up and driveing I seem to always be in clear flood mode , only after it goes into closed loop, thats the part I don't understand, clear flood mode( reduces injector pw to 20: to 1) its still not running right, still pops occasionaly thru the exhaust and sputters a bit after leaveing and intersection or light from an idle, cap and rotor are only acouple months old wire and plugs are new accel 8 mm wires and autolite 25 plugs they've benn in just a couple days, plugs always look the same all carboned up from running so rich , and oil usually smells like gas after a while . tbi is rebuilt gaskets, o rings ,fp rinjector spray pattern is good conical shape and mist no drips or leaks. fpr guage under the hood on my fpr says 11 lbs its liquid filled , heard conflicting storys on the accuracy level of lf guages. while revving engine it does'nt fluctuate actually I kinda question this guage, used to have a non liquid fp guage and that always max out at 15lbs and the needle had rapid vibration ,now this one says 11 lbs and does;nt move yet I'm running rich as hell, o2 cross counts apper normal but the actuall o2 readings itself the o2 seems lazy verry slow responding wich does'nt corralate with the o2 cross counts ,I,m lost here

If you have the correct injectors to match the tune, no exaust leak, then you should try and pull some fuel in the VE tables and see what happens.
Re: tbi runs mega rich all the time
I'm sorry , forgive my ignorance , I am less than knowledgeable about all the tuner talk , I am tryin like hell to pick it up , could you explain, I dont have any tuner software I have an auto xray 6000 scan tool , I really dont know how to decipher the values of what the scanner is telling me obviously The values of the coolant and tps is in spec b ut understanding int and blm is beyond me , If I sent you a readout of my scanner could you take a look at it for me and tell me what it looks like to you? (in spec or abnormal values etc)

Over 128 BLM the computer is adding fuel, its lean.
Under 128 BLM the computer is pulling fuel, its rich.
This information can be found on TGO with the search function.
I have no idea about V6 ECM's, though I doubt you can modify the VE tables or tune any tables with a scanner.
Check if these guys have the right tools to tune your V6 tbi.
