engine fires, then dies quickly i need some help

lets see my 1991 RS 5.0L tbi had been sitting for three years. finally decided to get it back on the road because my other car had got repoed. it has been sitting because the clutch is too far gone but anyways. the engine will fire rev up to 2000 rpms then die. i can kinda keep it going by hitting the gas but will not rev over 3000. if i hold the gas it dies. it had a 1/4 tank of gas in it so i filled it up with gas, put some treatment in the tank then did a full tune up. pcv valve, air filter, fuel filter, oil change, spark plug/wires. and the engine will not stay running. can some one please help me through this process of getting my engine running right so i can focus on the clutch an getting it street ready?????????

Have you tried pulling any codes? I just posted on another thread about the oil pressure switch and its relation to fuel pressure. However your situation sounds different in that you say you can play with the gas and keep it going for a while.

You say if you "hold the gas" it dies? I'm not sure what you mean by "hold the gas", you mean take you foot off the gas pedal?

How long can you keep it going by playing with the gas?

I've never had a throttle position sensor problem, but wonder what those act like?

My 5.0 does the same thing. It will fire up run right for like 2 secs then you have to pump the gas to keep it running and if you hold the pedal all the way down (Hold on the gas) it will die out. I got it as a project, replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter, made sure I am getting gas up to the injectors but it still does this. I am really interested to see what the heck is up with it. If I find out anything I will let u know.

I can keep mine running as long as I want playing with the gas. It wont stay constant or anything though. When it runs it will go up and down between 4grand and nothing while pumping.

I am having the same issue, car has been sitting 3 years.. I can keep it running with starting fluid but that is it. I can hear the fuel pump engage and pressurize the system when I turn the ignition on.. Let us know what your mechanic says, might save me a bunch of time and money. Thanks!

ok this is what he found out, he tested the fuel pump which is the culprit, but he tested at the fuel filter which at that point was only putting out 5psi at the filter so it must have been less at the tbi unit. Now when I look at the tbi when it was crankining it had a nice cone of fuel, so Iam assuming that the pressure really kicked off while trying to stay running OH it will be 300 and 500 dollars to drop everything and install new, I could do it myself but if there are any other issues its already there

well who ever said it was the pickup tube was right on the money seems there seems to be a big problem with the orginal ones, but then again the cars are all most 25 years old
well it was 500.00 dollars to have the pump put in the right way dropping the tank
can complain I did not want to spend my to much time under the car on the ground

you dont have to drop the tank to remove the pump, just cut an access hole from the trunk, theres how to's on hee just do a search. Wouldve saved you $500 & laying on your back dropping everything.

Re: engine fires, then dies quickly i need some help

yea I know but the car is completely original and only has 49000 on it, so I really did not want to start to cut up the car, when i mean original I mean completely no mods done just a few upgrades and still keep all the origianal parts BM shifter and strut tower brace and rear end links and pan hard
