Stuck switching TBI to carb

Hey guys, Right now my 91 is a TBI car, the 305 is on it's last legs, literally. So, I've been re-doing a 1978 350, out of a vette, with different heads ofcourse..

Anyway, reading the tech article, it says I have to get a replacement dizzy. Why is that? Why can't I just use the one for the TBI?

Yes so if you are using the tbi system with its computer you would not have too. But since your going carburetor you need a HEI vacuum advance or mechanical advance. Luckily you can get one fairly cheap if you dont want a MSD or Mallory distributor. Even those can be had fairly decent price. Not interested in keepign your tbi? you will get better fuel mileage, a little less overall power. Still respectable.

a well tuned TBI will make almost the exact same power as a carb the power difference is negligible. another nice advantage of efi in general, is that you get knock protection.

Well, I'm looking at getting around 300 horsepower, could the TBI do that much?

Re: Stuck switching TBI to carb

Found a HEI dizzy that drops right in, $130 from MSD, I found a 2101 Eddy intake in my garage thats square bore and spread, saved me $140, all I need is a carb, probably a spreadbore 600 Holley..

Re: Stuck switching TBI to carb

well, if you're gonna go the carb route, you should probably post up on the carb boards, but I'll tell you, after owning both carb, and EFI vehicles, I won't ever own another carb vehicle. if you can show me a carbed 454 crew cab dually truck that gets 17 MPG without overdrive and with 4.10 gears, I might consider going back to carbs.

it's a turbo 400, so it goes to 1:1, and that's it. I got 17.2 miles per gallon, over 8.2 miles, keep in mind though, traffic was almost non existent, and I was just cruising, I get about 16 MPG Hwy, going about 65-70 and that was empty... well, as empty as a crewcab dually with and 8 foot bed gets!, I'm still working on the tune though, so it could get better from here.
