l03 idle problem

Hey guys, My car has been idling funny lately and I was wondering if anybody had the same problem or knew what was going on.

When I first start the car it starts, 1500, 1300, 1000, 600 rpms. Then after I drive it like if I go to a stoplight or stop sign or if I ever put in the clutch, the RPMs jump up to 2000 or so and VERY slowly if at all glide down, and they usually stay at like 1000.

So I popped the hood and saw that my idle arm throttle linkage thing (not sure of name here sorry) but the part that you twist to make the engine go vroom lol, held it up for a second and dropped it and it did it like usual so I tried forcibly pushing it closed, which dropped it down to 550 where its supposed to be.

So I threw a heavy duty double spring on it and mounted it to a bracket but now not only is it insanely hard to push the gas peddle down but it still does it...

Any ideas? If you want I can post a picture of what I'm talking about

Re: l03 idle problem

Disconnect the cable from throttle body and move throttle with foot to see if resistance. If so cable may be badly worn.

If it moves smoothly may be shaft/opening in throttle body badly worn.

The peddle retracts and pushes in smoothly whether attached or not attached to the throttle deal, By the way heres some pictures of what i'm talking about

Re: l03 idle problem

If it is that shaft how do you replace that? I don't see how to take it out/off...

Also there was no spring there when I bought the car, should there have been? does anybody have pics of their throttle linkage and where their springs are (if any"?)

Re: l03 idle problem

I dont think there is or should be a spring there. There my be one at the pedal. But disconnect the cable spring from throttle shaft and wiggle it and move it through range to determine is the throttle body opening where shaft goes through is terribly worn. If so needs to be bushed.

Does not the cruise control or trans cable attach there?

I have a manual with no cruise control so theoretically yes one of those two should be there but my specific car doesn't have those lol.

I think I've figured it down to the throttle plates or the shaft that the plates sit on being warped or something of the nature.. where can I get a new shaft and or throttle plates? Should i just get a new throttle body?

Re: l03 idle problem

Plates dont wear out unless they are wearing on TB inside. Same on shaft. Inspect shaft(caliper). I would not buy a JY TB unit unless donor is low miles. Unlikely. I would send unit to a rebuilder like "diversified crossfire solutions" or member DC Trumpet or a local carb shop to have TB "bushed". same time I would send injs to FIC to be cleaned rebuilt or exchanged.

Do visual on linkage. I never hear of linkage wearing? Most likely it is happening at hole in TB where shaft sits.

I bet you car once had cruise?

I don't know if it ever had cruise but I don't have it anymore if I did ever have it lol.

theres some minor scratches on the inside of the throttle body right where the plate meets the wall but only on one side of the throttle body. (the metal is different color there, so i'm assuming) Thats what makes me think that its either warped and the plate is hitting the wall just barely on that side or something like that.

What is "bushing" the throttle body? Would that fix what I described and Would a standard automotive shop do that or would i have to go to a special carb/throttle body shop like the ones you said, I don't think there are any of those around where I live. also what is an FIC?

Re: l03 idle problem

If TB is worn at shaft entry it could cause "flys to rub". TB is alum and bushing insert is brass. they insert a bushing. done by carb shop I hear. not an auto repair shop unless they diagnose and send out TB for service,
FIC is an injector service search FIC Injectors. they come recommended at Corvette forum. Have a good rep.
