heads and cam is it worth it?
i have an lt1 cam and im currently looking at a set of local craigslist 882 heads. would it be worth taking the time to stuff this into my little 305? would 882s be too much for a 305 tbi?

882 heads are smog 350 heads from the 1970's with the huge 76cc combustion chambers, so your compression would drop way below what it is - they would be worse than what you have stock (if that's possible).

882 terrible idea
Your compression will go down to 8:1 or so.......plus as stated those are old school
smog heads you will spend more than they are worth.
You are better off getting 305 tpi heads can't recall the casting #

Re: heads and cam is it worth it?
oh how embarrassing of me to even think of such a ridiculous idea. i seen a camaro with a 400 and i think he said it has double hump heads. would they even be worth swapping in? i want to get the engine set up for a nice tuned port injection set up but it seems like everybody wants so much for the intake but they all say its junk. makes no sense to me. i want to keep it original with an lb9 based engine modded with my t5 i know that i need a cam heads and intake of course. would the lt1 cam be good enough or should i go with a better/new cam? i was checking cam prices and roller cams are so damn expensive for some reason
is it ok to swap in a hydro flat cam? my block is currently a roller. im only 17 but i do know a pretty good amount about engines i just want to make sure of everything with people who have alot more knowledge of this. i cant afford to do something twice

What are your power goals? The stock 305 TBI heads can support just under 300hp in stock form. An LT1 is a good simple swap. Heads and a cam swap are worth it if they are able to meet your power goals. Chip tuning is a must with these motors, and adding parts without learning how to tune will leave you very unhappy.

You can find a roller cam that matches your set up better, the LT1 cam's are available for 30-50$, in the end it depends on what combo an budget.
Roller cams make around 30hp over flat tapped cam, roller cams and lifters do not wear and are much more reliable.
Once you summ up the break in additive, the wear, added friction and bad reliability, the flat tapped cam is alot more expensive in the long terme.

With the LT1 cam, full exhaust upgrade and tuning the LO3 will make more hp then a stock LB9.

Re: heads and cam is it worth it?
i think im just going to get the headers so the exhaust is complete. the thing with roller cams is that they are really expensive. if i put a gear drive on regardless of the knock sensor would i gain anything from that or would a double roller timing gear and chain be a better route?
The thing with flat tappet cams is that they cost a lot more $ then a roller cam, in the long terme.
I do not see how a gear drive could give any gains in hp.
I would not even use a double chain, but a single GM performance style timing chain.

You don't want a chain drive. A nice stock aftermarket replacement is sufficient.

Re: heads and cam is it worth it?
If the heads are capable under 300hp max, then whats the paint of changing them?
Also would 1.7 rods and lt1 be a good combo?
I'm on his guide lines, on a budget and looking what would be best for now. I dont have 5k to drop on a carb crate to swap out with my 305tbi setup.. so i think small physical mods would help a bit for now..

1.7 rockers ya mean right? you'd have to have headwork on stock heads.

If you are on a budget than stick to simple bolt ons first. You need to replace the stock exhaust from the engine to the tailpipe. Some form of cold air intake would also be a quick mod and give you nice results.
