91 bird 350 tbi dies while stopping

I have a 1991 Pontiac 305 TBI automatic that recently began to die when slowing/stopping. I parked the car last October to begin body work on it, I drove it once/twice a month keep things moving and in shape. I started to drive it daily again last week, it is running great, mostly highway to and from work. It stalled on me when stopping last week. It started right back up no problems, I noticed my fuel gauge said 1/4 tank left. I drove the rest of the way home "pedaling" the throttle to keep it from dying when I was stopping. It drove fine all the way home except for stopping. I filled the tank the next day, cleaned my tbi. It seemed fine until today, I got to work stopped at a stop sign and it dies again the fule gauge was around 1/4 tank. started right back up and ran fine. My guage is not the issue it is reading correctly(based on the gallons at fill up time) Any thoughts? The car runs fantastic all other times, the fuel pump was replaced 5 months agao. Driving me crazy!
Thanks!

I had a very similar, sounds almost identical, problem with my car. The fuel line was clogged badly. Ended up having it completely replaced for some reasonplaces when my fuel pump went out.

cool so far this sounds the most simalur to my problem. so could you just take a air compressor and a blow gun (disconnecting the fuel lines from both sides) and blow through it to clean it out? which way would be better to blow it tank side or intake side?

you don't want to blow back into the fuel pump, you will kill it. Speaking of witch it sounds like your fuel pump is weak and or TPS.

blow back into the tank? I'll have both ends disconnected, I was just wondering if that would be an effective way to attempt to clean/clear the fuel lines. I think I may have fixed my problem however I can't fully say for sure. I topped of my tank with premium on lunch today (one last tank before I park it for the winter ganna miss it) anyway than I put about 3/4 of a bottle sea foam in the tank and the rest in the oil, drove it back to work, kinda tested it a red light with stopping pretty rapidly and it didn't die. than on my way home from work I decide to take it down a back road noticed some pinging in the higher RPM range (different problem I am assuming) then tested it again at a stop sign fairly rapid complete stop I even waited for traffic no surging of the car or fluctuation is the RPM (constant 500). I'll do more daily driving test tomorrow and let yall know. Thanks for leading me onto the fuel system I think we are all headed in the right direction now

Easy to pop a fuel pressure gauge on and see what you have, similar to a problem I had on my GN, put on a new pump, fuel filter was clogged, which is what caused the original pump to fail...

I just change my fuel filter in fall (haven't really driven that much since than) and I did have it in the shop around the same time the fuel pump wasn't sealing I believe that was their diagnosis. I just wouldn't have thought to check all that becasue the shop went over it

alright new development turns out problem wasn't fix (well at lest not 100%) still lunged at a stop light after driving on the highway for 10 min. anyone than on my way to work car started missing driving at 35 looked down and tac wasn't reading anything so I am leaning tword bad dizzy now. I'll be replacing it shortly (unsure sure to school/final schedule) due to that and cap mounting screw holes being stripped out. more updates to come

where do you get a fuel pressure gauge and how much you pay the only one I could find was 125 (special for fuel injection) and it wasn't in stock

Re: 91 bird 350 tbi dies while stopping

Dude I got a 91 Camaro RS, same setup, dying at idle and running like garbage. I bought it this way (for a steal) and the previous owner said he put two bottles of fuel treatment in it, which fouled out the TB with "black ****". It ended up being the little hose on the fuel pump being eaten away to nothing and it had popped a hole in the side. Happens to a lot of people from what I hear. Mine was a huge hole, but a small one could make your symptoms (pinging in high rpms=possible lean condition).

That being said, the tach was already messed up so the fact that both are happening to you makes me believe you may be right with the distributor theory. However, I would rent a FP gauge from auto zone or something just to rule out fuel before you go buying stuff.

Re: 91 bird 350 tbi dies while stopping

cool I see what you mean I took my intake off the past couple of days and the entire intake assemble was covered in thick black crap. I am ganna soak it in mineral spirits to clean it up than clean up the sensors are re-install. Also might be unrelated but noticed a couple of things my car had really bad valve rattle so I adjusted them and while doing that noticed that the wire going from the coil to the dizzy was shorting through the insulation so I got new plug wires too
