Re: Performance Mods on 5.0 RS

well because if your increasing the stroke, the piston would be too far up in the hole for a stock setup so you have to move the piston pin down which requires a custom piston

Re: Performance Mods on 5.0 RS

why keeping the 305 is so wrong. Don't hear any 5.0 Mustang guys complaining this much.

Excellent point still looking 4 advices

My engine has died instead of fixining I am biting the bullet and rebuiding the entire thing
305 TBI LO3
head 14102187 need to go but with what
intake 14102189 will this still fit on the new head
what about a cam

I want to dress the engine compartment up but still to look original but more power than the 170 hp

Suggestions

Not to mention, the 305 doesn't have problems (like splitting down the middle) when you really get up there in power.
Depends how much you want to do yourself and if you want to keep everything emissions compliant. What's your budget and how much power do you want to make?

Let me explain something. I've had both cars. They're not even comparable, as the fox is also a much lighter car.. so a bigger motor is not necessarily needed to push it. Hell, half of the reason why 5.0
s are slow isn't even the motor.. it's the pathetic gearing in the rear end. Drop a set of 373's or 410's and you'll start seeing they're not so "5slow" afterall. The other part is because the 302 had had a LOT more technology poured into/around it than the 305; 90% of which interchange between the 302 and 351. Even then - I sold my 302 and went with a 351. Outside of the intake because of a difference in deck height, everything else between the 302 and 351 is usable. That means - heads, cam, pushrods, UPPER intake (if applicable), lifters, rockers, whatever. You'll run into some issues with the oil pan, but you'll need to swap that anyways so that's not a big deal. There's not a big market for the 305 because the 350 has been the "standard" for so long.

Want faster? Do it right, and build a 350/383. Choosing to build a 305 over a 350 when the cost is the same is just dumb when you're looking for power. I don't have a garage I can yank a motor in every day either (nor am I nearly as experienced as some of us on here), but if you're going to go that far out of your way to tear that motor down - why mess with it? Just yank it out already and start with a better platform.

It's like that decision I needed to make with my mustang. Do I want a 302 stroked out to a 347? Or do I want a 351 stroked out to a 408? Cost is identical, so why on earth would I mess with the 302 when the 351 will go right in?? Outside of the deck height - they're the same size dimensionally speaking. You're in the same predicament, and there's a reason why people say GO WITH A 350. Think of it as the cheapest "mod" you can do while getting a fresh motor in the process. It's a win-win situation. What's there NOT to like?

Re: Performance Mods on 5.0 RS

why can't you just do turbo? Stroker 305 is a joke, 650 for kit then you have to do machine work. Vortec motor would be better deal in the long run. But to 305 defense the 350 was a crap build at one time too. Still hate 305s but you do what you like. There's one beating a 350 some where. And you can't compare a 305 to 302, the 302 has a 4inch bore. So if there's no down fall to the turbo might be best deal. Don't know a lot about turbos so the info may help us both out I see cheap kits on ebay

Re: Performance Mods on 5.0 RS

302 4inch bore 3inch stroke short deck made for rpms. It only splits above 500hp then you do supports the reason people know that is because it can make that and more. If you come across built fox body in your 305 don't bother he will send you home looking for a bigger motor and I don't mean a stroked 305. And please don't compare a 305 to ls1 it not the same either. And I know more then one 9 sec. 305 out there all on boost that's why I asked about turbo

Re: Performance Mods on 5.0 RS

this thread bobbed and weaved all over the place

it's been almost 4 months for the OP. Maybe he will come back and tell us what he did. He's had more than enough time to yank it, send it out if needed, reinstall and iron out any bugs
