L03 TBI bogging on light throttle
L03 TBI bogging on light throttle
Hey guys I just bought myself a summer toy, a 92 Camaro RS 305 TBI with 76,000 miles. No rust at all on a Michigan car, ill take it.
Anyway my problem is that anytime i give it a small amount of throttle the engine bogs down and rarely stalls. It never bogs on 1/2-WOT but spins the tires like a beast.
So far ive checked the TBI (butterfly valve bushings, fuel injector pattern, TV cable, Throttle cable) and cant find an issue.
Ive also changed the plugs (no problems there).
The car seems to run very rich but ive never noticed any black smoke out the exhaust.
There are no mods to the car as it stands.
The problem is worse when cold but still persists after it warms up. I've been trolling the forums for a while but can't find many posts related and the ones ive found havnt helped.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: L03 TBI bogging on light throttle
sounds like your getting too much fuel. check the injector spray pattern. one or both could be leaking down. bad coolant temp sensor is also possible.
Re: L03 TBI bogging on light throttle
The passenger side injector had a semi-poor spray pattern but since ive checked ive ran two bottles of injector cleaner through the tank. When i checked last there wasnt any problem with the injectors besides the ones pattern.
I did have to flush the radiator (only done it once so far). It was pretty bad. I unhooked the radiator hose from the top of the radiator and ran a hose through it while it was running until the water came out crystal clear but the antifreeze is brown colored still. I plan on doing it more i just dont have the time right now. The rusty antifreeze could have ruined the coolant temp sensor. Would that make such a huge difference in drivability?
Also i feel like i have no power, it doesn't downshift often when i bury the gas and takes forever to get up to 60 (that is if i dont just floor it from a stop).
I have 2.73 rear end gears, need to get a new rearend for more fun

Re: L03 TBI bogging on light throttle
It could be a number of things from a flaky TPS sensor to ignition timing or other stuff.
Check for vacuum leaks first. I've had a few where the PCV vacuum line had a big split down it (on the underside where you won't see it) and it would act similarly.

So i spent a little time with my baby today, just took it easy.
Turns out its base timing is set 2* advanced, and its staying that way for a while. Anyone know what the base timing is stock?
Anyway it seems the bolt to loosen the dist is seized into my aluminum manifold... guess ill pb blast it for a week or so and give it another try. I've already had to re-thread and sleave two bolts in the aluminum 700r4 and DON'T want to do it to the manifold...
As for vacuum leaks i sprayed some carb cleaner around the TBI, manifold gaskets, and vacuum hoses. No change in idle so im not sure where to look now (i HATE vacuum hoses...)
New coolant temp sensor also
So far no results.
If its sunny tomorrow ill take some pics and upload them here. Besides a few dings and chips this car looks brand new

So far no positive results. She stalled a couple times today in reverse.
Im noticing a new problem. I can't remember the exact rpms but between 2000-3000 i have a flat spot, very little acceleration unless WOT

Here's my list of to-dos
Check more vacuum lines (yay)
Research on TPS and testing procedures
Research on new distributors
FIND A JOB (Got laid off work after i started the overhaul on my Camaro)
I still need to name her
No such problems with coolant leaks, its rust. I have already checked the thermo and its fine, whats the opinion with running a 180* instead of the ~195*
New Bosch platinum plugs, less than 500 miles on them
BTW i appreciate the help guys

I believe TBI motors base timing is actually 0 BTDC. then the computer advances it once it's running

Re: L03 TBI bogging on light throttle
I believe you can get better performance by advancing the timing from stock setting on a tbi.
Re: L03 TBI bogging on light throttle
If stock timing is 0 then i know why the dist bold is seized, the guy before me was a hack. Anti seize is your friend when working with aluminum...
Cant find my pb blaster and don't want to go buy ANOTHER can before i get a job. Maybe ill break down and go get some more...
Stevolwevol your Camaro looks sweet, what are the wheels on that z28? Im gonna have to repaint my grill red too. I can't wait to get some money coming in so i can afford more parts. Love the hood and headlight accents too.

Thanks Aaron
The wheel on my IROC are american racing outlaw II, 15". I get flack sometimes for not having factory wheels, but I like them. The 92 is the Heritage package that comes with the stripes, black headlight pockets, and body color grill.

Re: L03 TBI bogging on light throttle
deffinately beneficial to advance the timing especially on a stock engine. I advance to 6*. of course the connector has to be unplugged. then the computer advances it even farther. trust me deffinately a mod you wanna do. but I would focus on figuring your problem out. because if timing is 2* you dont have a timing problem. unless you timing chain is stretched.
Re: L03 TBI bogging on light throttle
Is that 2* advanced setting with the timing wire disconnected? If not, your timing is set WAY retarded. The base timing MUST be set using the proper factory procedure (which basically amounts to disconnecting the timing wire while you check it with the gun).
Factory spec is 0* advanced. I've found that almost all TBI engines will take 4-6* BTDC advance with NO ill effects, yielding a nice little bump in power for zero bucks invested.
