Useless items

okay, another question. I see a lot of people with good looking engine bays, and they always seem less compact than mine is. i always here people say that a lot of the items in the engine bay, and that the computers are useless, that don't really matter and that it was just factory emission parts. anyone know what can be removed that wont affect that car?

Re: Useless items

EVERYTHING you remove is going to "affect" the car. The stuff wouldn't be there if it didn't have a purpose.

The trick is to understand the purpose of each of these devices.

Re: Useless items

Items that will dramatically open up your engine bay. Remove the A.I.R. system, as long as you don't have a tailpipe or visual inspection to pass it won't effect a thing. Open element air cleaner, I think you're doing that already. Relocate the heater diverter valve. If you don't need/want A/C or its not working, get rid of it. Could also locate and install a smaller puke bottle and washer res. Now step back, look at all the wiring and hoses laying about, see what can be done about rerouting, looming or otherwise making less of an eyesore. None of this will really effect driveability, will slightly reduce weight and parasitic losses, personally I prefer to just slam the hood, other disagree, look around here, you will see many very clean engine bays, observe what they've done.

beef, where would you relocate the heater diverter valve too? can you do away with all together and constantly run coolant through the heater core?

How hot do you want the interior to be?

Not to hot. I've seen people run heater core hoses to the manifold and to the water pump. What's the consequences of that?

FROM the manifold, TO the heater core? Bypasses the heater core. No heat, no heated air to defrost the windshield.

I wasn't clear. I meant run a hose from the inlet of heater core to the port on the intake manifold and another hose from the exit/ return to the water pump. Hot water from engine into heater core than cycles back through the water pump.

Depending on the vehicle, that'd be stock routing for heater hoses. Manifold is the pressure side for hot water, water pump is the suction side for the cooled water.

If the vehicle has a heater control valve, and you remove it, you'll have uncontrolled heat in the passenger compartment.
