stalling car, spark plug issue?

ok, so. ive posted in the tranny forums because my buddy said it could be that....BUT. i did a tuneup for ***** and giggles, found out that 5 were champions, and one was COMPLETELY wrong. i replaced tehm with some ngks, and......car is stalling worse than before.

before i replaced the plugs, car would start right up, drive well [but with engine sounding terrible] but as i drove, the car just wants to die constantly, as soon as i roll to a stop. maybe...15% of every stop i would stall. call would fire right back up, tho.

so i got new plugs and wires. NOW she ran GORGEOUS, but after i drive maybe.....1/4 mile, car will stall before i even come to a stop, and id have to PUMP the gas to try and get the rpms up while i hold the key, and floor it, shift to drive, and squeal away.

attatched is a pic of the three plugs.

first is the champions, there were 5 of them.
second is the mystery plug which is clearly wrong.
and the third is the ngks i bought.

i mainly just dont know why the car is stalling....im about to get an msd cap and rotor here in about 5 minutes, so im sure that will help. im also curious as to why brand new plugs just dont work.

the old plugs were gapped to .045, and i gapped the ngks to the stock .035?

Can't really see the business ends of the plugs but do let us know if the cap and rotor help. Edward.

If the cap and rotor don't help then I would look at the ignition coil. Even though mine tested OK it was causing a stalling problem for me. I replaced the coil and have not stalled in over 2 weeks. Borg Warner makes a coil for $35.99 under the brand name BWD .Replaced an ACCEL Super Coil with it and it runs like a champ.

fired up, sounded good. went to back out of the garage in reverse, and the rpms just started dropping and running REALLY rough. backfired and when i got out of the car after it finally stalled the garage was full of white smoke.

Re: stalling car, spark plug issue?

Instead of buying a sh!tload of parts you may not need, how about some actual diagnosis?

What is your fuel pressure?
Does the torque converter clutch disengage properly?
What is the cranking compression of each cylinder?
Any diagnostic codes stored?
Does the Idle Air Control work properly?

That's a good start.

Re: stalling car, spark plug issue?

My rpm's would nosedive when I applied the brakes in both forward and reverse. Sometimes the car would catch itself, other times it would die. Ended up being the distributor. Good luck in your quest, I think you are on the right track. Everything mentioned, like plugs, wires, cap, rotor are normal wear items that are pretty inexpensive and certainly worth replacing.

well, i feel like i should put this to rest. the white smoke was a headgasket. i fixed the spark issue, and blew it up.

Re: stalling car, spark plug issue?

I had a stalling issue too, I didn't get to read your whole post but it turned out to be the electronic spark control. It's on the drivers side close to the fire wall
