Is this common for a 305????

I have been out of the 3rd gen f-body loop for a while. But i had two 305 tbi f-body cars and they sure wouldnt do this! This car is a 91 Firebird Formula. And the car is stock minus the removal of the cat, a.i.r., smog pump, a muffler, ac delete, a tbi spacer, and open element..... This car is wicked fast compared to my camaro rs's i had. It will break traction rolling at 20 mph, it will get scary sideways off the light and not hook up till its well into 2nd gear (this is all with a auto). Am i wrong for thinking that its been swaped for a 350 at one time? Or maybe has some corvette heads? Or gear swap? Am i missing something..... How could i check what size block is in it, and rear gears? The PO was a young guy who didnt know anything about it, all he could say is that he got it from his uncle that way. Any help or input would be greatly appreciated!

RS most likely had 2.73 open differential and the car you have now sounds like a gear change to me.

2.73 is a dog in a 5.0 especially with the open diff.
A gear swap to a posi and 3.73 or higher can give you a car like that.

I've got a 3.73 posi in my mostly stock 305 tbi. I'm lucky if I get a quick chirp off the line. Although, my rubber is fairly fresh. Only a few months old.

Re: Is this common for a 305????

Its all in the slush box,

I can burn em into 3rd with my V6, but I can rev it up and keep the RPMS in the sweet spot before I shift.

a drive way install shift kit and higher stall TC and it will burn every gear, as it plants the power right.

Has very little to do with the engine, more then enough power if planted right. Now im not saying it will make you "FAST" but if you plant the power right, you could shread tires with an iron duke.

Thanks so much ex x fire! I'm going to look rite now. And gumby I love that notch back! Was it hard to swap that hatch out, I'm getting ready to go to my parts source, and he has one I can have. And no its not on a OEM notch back car that I'm pulling it from lol.

look on the block behind the driver's side head, you will need a flashlight. You should either see 5.0L or 5.7L there. Sounds like your trans might have a shift kit too. Does it bang into each gear under heavier acceleration?

easy enough, did it alone, the hing window bolts in can suck tryin to get a good grip. [ came out easy, going in one was a bear to hold still ]

only down side is ya can't get a hatch shock to work right, they are all to strong and twist the right corner up, why I have the "hood pins" on it. It still locks as normal, they are used to keep the hatch pushed down.

or the lip on the right would be up an inch, having no hatch shocks sucks using a prop rod.

back on topic, ive done it all to my 12ton wagon, intake, carb, ign system, MSD........ the higher stall TC and shift kit made the most difference. I can chirp gears in a full frame wagon at part throttle, as the power is planted right. all other mods wear off soon, but that one makes me smile every time I drive it. [ when I can afford the gas ]
