Camaro 1989 Iroc-z . Error 43
Camaro 1989 Iroc-z . Error 43
Hi from Italy!
I have an iroc-z camaro 1989.
When he is run in the way the Service Engine Soon flashes and the car is slowly.
With the lamp-test i have found only the error 43, well Knock sensor or ESC.
My knock sensor is new, i have try my ESC with a multimeter, it have GRUND and +12v, the third pin is connected with the knock sensor, and the fourth pin have 9.2-9.3 volts, and this signal arrive at the ECM. (the ECM is new)
What can it be??
Thanks and sorry for my english!!

I get mine on eBay, they're not expensive, although shipping (and language) may be an issue since it's going to Italy.

Re: Camaro 1989 Iroc-z . Error 43
There are two ways to set code 43. The first is if the ECM is getting a constant knock report from the knock module. In this case the code would be set within 10 seconds or so after starting the engine.
If the 9.2 - 9.3 volts on pin 4 of the module is also seen at ECM pin B7, that is not the cause of the malfunction code. when the knock module reports knock it pulls that voltage low.
The second way to set the code 43 is if the forced knock test fails. On a warm engine and at or near WOT, the ECM advances the spark advance to force the engine to knock. If the ESC system picks up and reports the knock all is OK.
If the ECM doesn't see knock during this period it tries again to force knock.
If this attempt also fails then code 43 is set and the spark advance is reduced (loss of power).
If you do a search on this board (TBI) and the General Engine board using "forced + knock" along with me as the author, more threads on this will show up in the search.

P.S. welcome to TGO

Oh thanks!
My code 43 don't set in 10 seconds but when the car is in WOT, my car lose power and the Service engine soon flash.
I think that is the second way to set the code 43, right?
I have to change my ESC?
(in the pin B7 i have 9.2-9.3 volts)

I have to change my ESC?
The first one to check is the connector to the knock sensor. Many times they fall apart and disconnect from the sensor.
It is also easy to swap the fan switch connector and the knock sensor connector. This too will cause code 43.

Thanks, i've read the other post without solutions
I have check the connector and it is good.
the wire goes from the knock sensor to the ESC and is good.
what other proof can i do for you?

Try this: on a warm engine raise the idle speed to about 1200 RPM and hold it. Use a wooden stick (hammer handle, broom stick), and rap on the engine block in the area of the knock sensor.
This should cause the RPM to dip down and recover as the ECM pulls spark advance. Can also use a scan tool on the ALDL port to see the actual counts.
If this works then the ESC system is operational.

Hi , i have try this, but notinhg appened...
Hi have this problem only on run,
when the car is stationary bike can stand for an hour without turning on the light.
When on the road do a lunge ( often the case in this situation ) , the car rips , then light comes with error 43 . Could be the plug wires ? ( I put them new but maybe downloading current )
Thanks

With the 'rapping on the block' test not causing the RPM to dip, the ESC system is not working. This could be a bad knock sensor, or knock filter, or a wiring issue.
You should also be able to hear the engine knock/ping when you go WOT (do a lunge).
The knock/ping sounds like marbles rattling in a tin can.

My heartbeat sensor is new , and the cabalggio I checked everything , the ESC could be broken ?
The sensor I pulled to 17Nm .
Tonight better try again to take the test .
Maybe I made a mistake on the minimum , in summary ...
do self an advance phase of 8 ° to the operating temperature imposed on the minimum at 1200 rpm and beat on the sensor.
Fair Enough?
