Removing Injectors
Removing Injectors
I'm starting to disassemble my CFI TBs so I can clean and rebuild them. But how do I get the injectors out? I have the top of the pod taken off but the injector is in there with the grip of death. I think I see an O-ring around the injector? I afraid to just start prying.

find something not too hard. like wood. with a hole in it big enough so that the center of the injector (where the fuel comes out) is not touching anything, you dont want to bend or damage the lip there. Now that only the edge of the bottom of the injector is touching the wood. push down from the top pushing only on the pod. depending on how long it has been in there, it will take some force. but since you are only pushing on the edge of the bottom of the injector, and the pod, you wont hurt anything.
You have to lay a screwdriver across the fuel tower, and then pry up on the injector with another screwdriver. You are probably going to mangle up the o-rings, but since you're taking them apart for rebuilding/cleaning I figger you're already looking at buying the kit.

EDIT: DOH! Guess I should learn to read and understand what CFI means!
I guess that's a bit different from the regular TBI...

I guess that's a bit different from the regular TBI... Not really, CFI TBs are just 1-barrel units, they don't seem to be much different otherwise. Hey Snuf, are you talking about pushing the injector from below to pop it out? Hmmm.... if thats the case I now have deal with another problem, the fuel line fittings in the pod are also in with a death grip, so I can't get the pod off
, ahhh the joys of working on 20 year old parts.
, ahhh the joys of working on 20 year old parts. The o-ring comes out when the injector comes out. I don't think you can get it out without removing the injector (well without mangling it anyway). If I recall correctly, there is an o-ring AND a thin metal "washer" at the top of the injector, and a smaller o-ring along the bottom of the injector. If they're like a regular TBI then it just takes some prying to get them to come out, then some tapping with a screwdriver and hammer to get them back in. You can't get a regular TBI's injectors out by pushing from the bottom, they're encased in the "tower" and you'd be pushing up directly on the "jets" which could jack them up.
Hope this helps somewhat,
Steve

you will have to bolt the tb back to your manifold and then take out the fuel line fittings. so you have some leverage, you wont get them out by holding it in your hand.
unless you soak the threads with a buch of wd40 or something, and it would take a while to seap in.
there is nothing but age holding the injector in once you have removed the top of the pod. i will post a pic for you to go look at in a minute.
as long as the top of the pod is off, you can push up from the bottom, or pry on the mushroom at the top, or both.
if you take out the top oring, if you can get to it, you still have another o ring in at the bottom.
just push, and pry from the top as you do. it will make it eventually. you dont really have to worry about breaking the injector or anything. just be careful with the little lip around the tiny pin where the fuel comes out.
pic on its way to your email.
