So, I believe the manual for our car reccomends 88.5, Alaska gas only goes to 88, it is what it is...
However, today I was a little startled and annoyed when I realized after filling up at a local shell station, the mid grade was 30 CENTS more expensive then the regular stuff. And that was just the mid grade... down the street the same gas was 20 cents cheaper, so I was very annoyed that I didn't do a better job price checking.
Anyways, the point of this thread is to ask, what gas are yall putting in your cars? Our 305s are so slow and gutless... is mid-grade REALLY necessary? I don't know if I can justify even a 10cent gas premium filling up my car, as much as I love and adore her.
SO, what's the expert opinion? Do these engines need the extra octane?
If you do not need the higher octane to prevent pinging or detonation, then you are wasting your money.
Realize that when these cars were built that the gasoline formulations were different compared to today.
Is today's fuel better or worse? It all depends on your situation and location. You just have to feed the engine what IT likes, not necessarily what you want to give it.
When these cars were new the engines pinged. The owners manual states that pinging is normal(?) under acceleration and that heavy knocking is considered abnormal. My 305 TBI is stock with a functioning EGR and the base timing is set at 0 BTDC and it pings on 87 octane. I have to put in 89 and up if I don’t want to hear it ping.
The downside is you get to pay more for gas, but as a plus you get awful fuel economy and no power, lol.
But I love my car too and enjoy driving it everyday.
Mid-Grade or higher by habit and because there's a + or - of a certain percentage of the octane warning on pump handles. I'd be mad if I filled up on 87 octane that was really like watered down 85ish octane.

Like I said, I'm only doing what the manual said... I don't spend money just to spend it.
I'll follow your advice and see how she likes the regular.
