External Fuel Pump Location

Hey all, I am putting in a Sniper EFI. Car is an 82 Z28 originally carbed 305 now 350+t56 with 95 rearend assembly).

The short story:
I was going to do the LS, just not enough time or space in life. I want to use the car a lot more... this will be my first step to get it to a daily driver.

So, where I am at today:
I am mostly through the install of Sniper Efi with 6.8" pro dash. I am trying to decide where to put the Walbro. Does anyone have pics of their installations of an external fuel pump? Does and Don'ts? I think I can mount prefilter and pump all in a row pointing straight down and clear my brake line junction to rearend. Basically right between body and line. Some problems might be it will be tight (everything under these cars are tight) and the power wires will be right at the bottom and a bit exposed. I will then need to put the after filter under the rear seat. Any help would be appreciated!

Re: External Fuel Pump Location

Getting a newer efi tank and In tank pump is your best solution.

Re: External Fuel Pump Location

Yeah, that was originally my thought, but falls under the same thing as the engine sway, though not as bad. I just don't have a lot of time and space to do that work. I was going to do the Aeromotive new tank but gets spendy pretty fast. When I go that route I am going to do it all. The external is easy for a short-term (a few years), to get up and running. Since I already have a carb tank, I don't have to pull anything. Just adjust some lines. That and find a good place for this pump. Long-term, I agree. I will be adding a full tank.

Re: External Fuel Pump Location

A external doesn’t have much suction designed for gravity feed.
you can get a tank for newer efi 3rd gen

Yeah, I looked into that as well. I just figured if I went all-new, the Aeromotive isn't that much more cash and is all complete with no modifications needed. One-stop shopping. I was going to go that route with new lines. It just started adding up. For now, I was going to put this one outside the tank. Start driving the car again while I plan the big build. My goal would be to have all the parts ready to go and switch it all out. The stock efi tank (all-new, but separate pieces) came in at like $330. The Aeromotive tank is $513. Then I was pricing outlines and likely a Corvette filter/regulator. That was all going to be $700+. So, hence the $100+$18 for filters. First step. Overall I completely agree with you. I just have decided to do the baby step route to get there.

Here's mine. There is a lot of room in that area.

Ahh, that's great! That was about my plan. I do have a pre-filter ahead of the pump. Makes the pump maybe just a hair lower than yours. Then the same filter downstream. Cool! Did you drill holes through the floor pan for the mounting? I was thinking I would hang a new bracket from that vent valve bracket and hole. From there hold it in the same area as yours. Thoughts? Cool, thanks a lot!

There is a pre-filter there as well. Here's a better picture showing that. I just ran a couple sheet metal screws in for the pump bracket.

This helped a lot! Thanks again! I have made some progress... After putting my tank into a siphon and emptying the last few gallons unexpectedly... that sucked. I did not see that coming. I watched like 10 tank removal videos (many with more gas than I had in it) and it didn't happen to anyone else... Nonetheless, Did you bubble flair the end of your lines to keep the soft line on? Or did you just clamp to the strait end? Also, have you had any issue with your pump being lower? I have mine right under the brake line, but it is tight there. I didn't want it lower because the flair at the bottom of the pump gets pretty low. Thoughts? Have you had any issues with water on the terminals? I don't have covers for those either. Should I be concerned? Thanks again for the help! This is the last step of getting the Sniper EFI in. Looking forward to firing up!

Re: External Fuel Pump Location

I would double clamp the rubber hose to the straight steel line. It's probably a good idea to put some silicone on the connectors since they don't have covers. It's been about ten years and I haven't had any issues with the pump at this height or water in the connectors.

Re: External Fuel Pump Location

I would be using shielded clamps at minimum, "Fuel Injection" clamps ideally.

Clamping rubber hose directly to steel or plastic tubing is a bad idea unless the tubing is beaded to retain the hose.

Agree! I have been using Earl's Vapor Gaurd clamps and EFI hose. Right now I have two 3/8ths claps on the strait hose. No leaks. I may add a -6AN converter in the future. I wanted to get the Holley Sniper up and running and tuning. I will like swap out this section with ANs and braided line. It is only about 12", but a bit exposed under the driver side rear seat. Funny, Holley has some great videos on the installation, but they use pretty "ideal" cars to show it. Thanks!
