So I had a smog tech see what else I needed to do before I could legalize it, and he pointed at the back of the air cleaner and said I was missing this, but I have no idea what it is called, all I know is I don't have it. I found this photo off of a 305 forum. could anyone tell me what its called or provide a part number or better photo of it?
Often called the "Bowtie filter". There was a time when you could buy the fabric "pad" cut to fit the existing plastic holder; but since yours is entirely missing you need the complete unit along with the spring-steel clip that holds it in place.
PO had put an open breather system on it, so I don't have a reference part, does anyone have a part number for the breather that comes off from the valve cover?
Chrysler tended to use "sealed breathers". GM typically used a grommet in the hole of the valve cover, and a "vent tube" connected to the air cleaner breather filter with a short section of hose, no clamps. The service manual set for your vehicle should have details.
Emergency toilet paper. Keep it in the trunk so you don't disgrace yourself without something to wipe with.
You need the REAL service manual set--not necessarily for this minor issue, but certainly in the future you're gonna have more difficult problems. The proper service manual set may be more than one volume. Not unheard of to have separate books for emissions, electrical, major components, etc. I've gotten several on eBay for advantageous prices. Otherwise, available on disc from aftermarket sources, or from the official but expensive source, Helm Inc.
The 4bbl cars had really similar or the same parts.
Cross reference PNs to an 84 or 87 to verify.
The air cleaner piece has the plastic ribbed tube sticking out once you install that.
A grommet in the valve cover had a sweeping bent aluminum flared tube stuck in it, the other end of the tube has a short rubber hose that slips onto the plastic air cleaner piece. It is a "sealed breather" and if you dig through google or eBay listings for crank case breather tube, air cleaner breather tbi firebird etc., you'll see what you need. Post in the classifieds here.
