zz4 w/454tbi
zz4 w/454tbi
Ok....I have been searching the boards, making phone calls, and talking to my friends. I want to buy the zz4 crate engine and install the 454 tbi on it. I know I will have to have a custom burned chip and due some work with the fuel pressure and things of that sort to get it tweaked out. Will all the connectors and sensors hook up off of a 1992 camaro rs tbi system. Jegs told that I was silly for putting this combo together and said that the 454 tbi would not work with the stock plug ins. If anyone can tell me what will have to change, what I can change and what I hvae to have to make this combo work will greatly be appreciated. If you would like to email me about instead of posting it: mballard@glasgow-ky.com
thanks for the help ahead of time.

the 454 or 670 just needs a simple rewire to work. As for the whole combo, it sounds cool. Maybe get a Victor Jr intake for it and invest in some chip burning equipment. Or adapt a LT1 intake and put a TPI wiring harness on it.

Jegs are idiots. Summit is just slightly better. The only guys that know anything in either companies don't have such a low position that they talk to customers. Either they race or have a nice cushy job thinking up "projects" and events.
As for the 454 not working, call that guy back up and tell him to check out my website. Stupid STUPID person. Infact, give me his name and I'll walk over to Jegs (down the street from me) and give him a piece of my mind. The people they hire are college/high school kids that think you need a carb to be fast in the 1/4 and that EFI is WAY too expensive.
I'd like to sway you away from the zz4 unless you plan on doing a power adder in the future. The zz4 bottom end is only slightly stronger than the 330 ho motor. The ho has 4 bolt nod iron crank forged rods but cast pistons. The heads are vortec iron which are better design than the old style L98 that the zz4 uses. Infact, the vortec heads only problems are lift and they're made of iron, not aluminum. I don't like the zz4 cam either. 355hp is a joke. It's a worthless roller and needs to be replaced with the hotcam. Hmm... 330 ho motor with worked over vortec heads and a hotcam made 422hp with the victor intake. Go figure
Now if you do go with the zz4, the only thing you'll need mechanically to get the 454 TB to fit is an adaptor plate. Depending on what intake manifold you go with you can either make one or buy one. If you plan on staying with TBI then go with the victor intake.
Just a question but do you have hood clearance?
Definatly need a new eprom and you better certain that you use the big block injectors!

yes, I do believe I will have the hood clearance. thanks for all the information. I will look into each engine again and look at a few things with those. I was planning later on in the future to possible to try and find a supercharger to go with it, but that is a little farther down the road. thanks again.
My .02. I used a 454 TBI from a 92 454. The TPS switch was identical, but the IAC hook up was different. I got an adapeter from turbo city and it just plugged in. You can definitly make an adapter yourself and save the $25. Also, the throttle linkage was way different on the 454, so I swapped the linkage off my stock TBi and put it on the 454. I had to grind off the welds to get them off and just tacked the likage back on. A machine shop will do it for $20 or so. I cannot speak to the zz4, but the vortech is a great way to go. I didn't use it cause the EGR was a pain in the *** to get working but in hind site not really that big of a deal.
My set up is VERY GOOD and a total bolt in, but I am not sure
it would keep up with the Vortech. Wish I had used the lt4 cam instead of the lt1 but oh well. my set up will stay with a ws6firebird to 135 in 4th gear @5,000 rpm but after that the ws6
will pull away. thats the only race I have had thats worth mentioning. Good luck...............bob

The zz430 with fastburn heads and the lt4 hot cam made 430hp. Isn't it funny that the 330 ho motor with the vortec heads machine ONLY for higher lift made 422hp with the same cam! I think that's funny. Only a 8hp difference yet $$$ seperates them.
The zz430 uses the zz4 bottome end so slightly stronger. The fastburns are aluminum so that helps save 50+lbs although the vortec heads have been said to be pretty light considering the thing castings (proven because they are prone to cracking if overheating too frequently).
I can definatly see the 330ho motor with the Lt4 hot cam, the victor jr intake and a 75hp shot of N2o. That's my plan.
I'm considering either a cam swap or N2o for this summers project. I also have to save up for a paint job, a new torque arm, and new fuel pump (maybe even tank). Either way I go with the cam or N2o I'll probably want to get larger injectors. I'll never pay for new slicks but if the price is right I might pick some up on some 15x8 gambler style wheels to match my 16x8s. Oh well.
I just think the zz4 is overpriced for a normal street machine. The forged crank helps but from my sources, the nod iron is PLENTY strong.
That's just my 2 cents. Oh yeah, and if I ever do want more power it'll probably be time for a rebuild anyways. I can't see myself getting tired of a 420hp 350 and ~500hp on some juice. That's PLENTY for a car that is a daily driver.

Help me understand for sure. Everything will hook off my 305 computer to the 350 zz4 crate engine. The distributer, the fan switch and all the other hook up will hook. That is the way I understood it. If there is something that wont work let me know please. And also would the tbi from turbo citybe sufficient enough to feed this. I can't seem to find a 454 tbi around my area. thanks ahead.
??- I don't personally know anyone running a ZZ4 off the stock tbi, but I do know a few guys running 383s and even 400s off the 1 11/16" bore tbi without any problems- they're probably losing a little top end, but most of those guys have auto trannys and live in the city, so I don't think they're too worried about it. I know I 've been looking for a 454 tbi around here for a while now with no luck- i'd say just try the stock tbi and if it sucks ***** then worry about it later. Think about it, it's gonna feel like a totally new car and be respectably fast no matter what with the new engine in it.
