Oil Pressure question & check out my new wheels!

For some reason today, my oil pressure gauge read with the needle at maximum (about 70-80 on a 0-60psi gauge). It did not go down to 0 after the car was shut down, so I suspect the sender has failed. I'd just like some opinions on what else could be wrong

Don't ignore it! Watch that guage!

Might be your oil pump.... my gauge was going batty just before the oil pump went out, then the whole engine!
it would read really high... then zilch then really high
then tick tick tick tick tick tick (can we say rod?)
(The sound you don't want to hear)

Thanks for the reply.

Yikes! I'll see how much it costs to replace the oil pump. Thanks for the warning.

i looked into all the stuff for that job. it's gonna be like $40 for parts and a whole bunch of time to take off the pan. all the parts came from pepboys, but the pan looks like it has a one piece rubber gasket that should be re-usable. plan for alot of time before you replace the pump. looks to be a bear.

I took my car back 3 times now and they cant get the Fuggin things right!. I will never buy nor recommed pepboys for anything... NOT EVEN PARTS!!!!!

What kind of front end is that? It doesn't look like the stock formula, that's for sure. Where are your turn signals?
Any pics of the front?

Thanks for all the replies.

The shaker scoop is part of the Bandit II scheme. It is fake, just bolted onto the hood. I have a real one to go on it, whenever I get time.

It started to read normally today, then jumped back up to maximum. I'll try your suggestions, and with 140k miles it may be a good idea to get that pump checked . If my sender is dieing, I'll give you an email. Just need some time to check things out.

My car is not a formula, but I have all the WS6 stuff save the springs, and steering column. This is what the car looked like before

2 things, replace the oil pressure sender switch right by the filter and see if that fixes it. second, do not reuse the gasket. gaskets are meant to only be used once... take my word on that one.

Hook up a real gauge to it and check the pressure before you do anything else, oil pumps seldom go bad, my gauge has been reading normal at idle and at anything over 1800 RPM it starts bouncing wildly and then pegs the gauge out, it's been doing this for 4 years and no problems yet. I did check it with a real gauge when it first started acting weird and it had normal pressure.

That sounds like a great idea, hooking up a live gauge to car, I was not aware it could be accomplished, but I am learning all the time . I had planned on replacing the gasket anyhow, no disrespect to you Jason Bennett, but I have yet to have had a good experience re-using old gaskets, and I cannot go wrong with a new one, if the case presents itself where I would need one.

Thanks for all of the replies, I now have a very solid base for tackling this problem.

Clint

about the pump going bad... i highly doubt thats it. an oil pump should last the life of the motor
