Cold Air Induction or Open Element?
Cold Air Induction or Open Element?
I have a 1992 Chevy Camaro RS with TBI; I just bought it and its pretty much stock. The question is should I replace the factory air induction system with a cold air induction system or an aftermarket open element setup. I know both would be better than the stock setup but which is best? I don’t want to spend a lot of money so buying a $200 plus aftermarket cold air induction system is out of the question. I was thinking either finding a used H.O. snorkel air cleaner or buying a good aftermarket open element air cleaner. Can someone please give me some suggestions as to which method you would use?
Also I live in Florida, I am at about sea level and I changed my cooling setup so the car runs at 180 degrees instead of stock. Don’t know if that means anything but I figured I should let you know.

this was the topic of the week last week, but you are new
the fastest way to find something is by doing a search, and if it isn't there then post your specific question,
I'm glad someone told me that when I was new,

Thanks, their is a lot of good information their. However it still did not anwser my question. !Which is better cold air induction or open element? I cant decide which to use open air or cold air. Please give me some suggestions.
the colder the air the better but the open element works wonders over the stock crap...im running a 14x3 non drop base k&n open element...works great and looks much better...clears up the engine compartment some...so does ripping out the emmissions, AC, air injection but i wouldnt know about that

my vote is for the open element, sounds cool (you'll find out), looks cool, and is dirt cheap compared to the cold air stuff, mine was 32 bucks (Mr. Gasket) now I have a extra one and I'm gonna paint it red and have a buddy air brush something on it

It may not be the nicest looking but it is probable the best homemade system I've seen. I'll be trying this my self soon. It will cost under $100 to make $50 of that being for the 2 K&N Filters($25.99 each) . I guess it will take 2 to 3 hours and give 10 to 20 hp.
Also check this out it will better show how the tubes route in the front end. https://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/tech/ramair.shtml
This set up will provide all the cool air the LO3 will ever need plus an added ram air efect at speed.
Hope this helps.

cold air induction in florida???it is hot over there like it is over here almost... just go with a open element from edelbrock you can pick them up at autozone checkers, kragen what ever you have on the east coast...almost 90% of the guys using tbi use open element only a hand full try the cold air induction...

I've had it both ways ... now I run the Open Element only.
My cold air was more of a 'ram air'. I had a 8 X 4 Funnel tucked up by the front air dam, which ran to 5' of 3inch metal dryer tubing that ran up through my quarter panel. (right where the battery would sit if it was on the driver's side.) Then connected to the stock air cleaner base. I did have to move a few things (like the horn and various other little stuff) in order to run the tube through the quarter panel.
The problem with that setup was that it was still pulling air through the 1 X 3 inch stock air cleaner base. Which obviously isnt enough.
I am very happy with the open air, especially with my formula hood which has the bulge plate removed (i found a honeycomb plate from a 82-84 TA and put that in there. Looks great)
The main thing that people say about the open air is that it DOES let the engine suck more air, however it sucks the HOT AIR from the engine compartment. Easy solution is a Cowl hood, or something like mine or what Tallboy is talking about...
Hope it helps ...
I say go with Open Element.
I got pics of mine if you wanna see.
