High Load/Throttle Near Shut Down.. More than one problem
High Load/Throttle Near Shut Down.. More than one problem
87 305 4 bbl, for starters... Open element..3 spd automatic out of a firebird...
Car starts reasonably well hot or cold, idle goes up, depress the gas, idle goes down, gas again, idle goes down some more. In gear, idle goes down again.
In 70 or 80 degree weather, it idles lower (5 or 600) than in the cold... I make 8 to 10 stops on my 10 minute drive to work, car runs at a little under 220 with the fan on all the time. I cant decide if that's a simple thermostat problem (need a lower setting), or if I might need to replace the radiator. I also wonder if the problem could be related to the fact that the air the engine is using might already be warmer than stock conditions because there's no cold air coming in from a snorkel.
My main performance problem looks like this: with the TPS plugged in, the car is easier to start but idles rough and low, and with the TPS unplugged the car is harder to start initially but has a MUCH smoother idle. I am slowly pumping the gas pedle three to four times both ways. I can't decide if I need to replace the TPS module in the actual carb, or the little 3 wire sending unit. Is there a way to check both with a volmeter?
The second half of the problem, which may or may not be related, is that coming off idle, the car will accelerate well until the 3500-4000 range, where it has difficulty shifting into 2nd. The car basically dies on me, I get no throttle response (push it to the floor and the car doesn't react for several seconds, and then it'll surge with the RPMs up and down! If I come off the throttle, wait a few seconds, get back on, I can make it into 3rd gear, where I get all of my acceleration back.
If I keep it under 3000 through first gear, no surge, no hesitation.
With a different approach, if I get up into third, then accelerate hard, there's no hesitation, no surge.
Somebody help me please! :hail:
I think that the first place I need to start is obviously with a double check of my timing, but my plugs, wires, cap and rotor are all new, and I have no fouled plugs. I think that I also need to figure out the TPS problem, but I dont think that's what's causing my acceleration problem. Do I have a vacuum leak in a line that deals with my transmission? My fluid is good color and full, but is there any reason I should replace it?
I got some great help a few days ago.... maybe I'm askin for too much, or maybe you guys are the greatest...
