Accessory fuse blows...

The Accessories fuse blows. I know that there's a short.
But where do I look? All I know is that the wire is orange.
There are tons of other orange wires.
All the wires are in black plastic flexible coil thingy (makes it very hard to trace the one, of many, orange wire).

The following don't work, cigar lighter, map/courtesy light, and stereo (won't work on ACC postion).
Is this because the Accessory fuse is blown?

Umm.. Yes, it is most likely your relay under the dash. Ir you replace the fuse and then put something in your ciggarte lighter does it blow the fuse? Mine did that for a while and I traced it back to a burnt out realy under the dash.

well a fuse dosnt just blow by itself, something caused it to blow. your job as of now is to track down that something. I'd start with the grounds first, although i'm not sure where they are.

If you had a gm factory manual then you could find all your grounds reletivly easy....if you dont have one then just pray someone on this board knows where they are, cause they're near impossible to find on late model cars...

The first thing you are going to need is some way to check a short in a circuit. A multimeter of some sort or a probe looking thing with a light bulb in it. I prefer to use a multimeter because I can tell how much resistance I have to ground. 10kohms is shorted to ground just as 20 ohms is, but the 20ohms is alot better ground.
I had a problem with my 90 IrocZ: my power locks, my hatch, and my power mirrors were not working.
I took all the switches/connections apart ohmed everything out and I could not find the problem. Replaced the fuse( which had blown 3 times before) and everything worked fine????
But you are going to need a wiring diagram to chase this around.
Just an idea....
Good luck
Rudy

Take the lighter out and leave it out, put in new fuse.

I had a problem with that, turned out to be the cigarette lighter... the stock unit had rusted pretty badly, probably had something stuck back in it too. Whenever I went to plug something in (never the lighter, since I lost that.. hehe) the fuse would blow. Worth checking into. A new one's only a couple of bucks anyways.

Seems like the cig. lighter was a real piece of crap. Mine did the same thing, every time I would plug something into it my acc. fuse blew. You CANT get the original lighter from the dealership, even though they say they have it in stock, the part number they gave me did not fit correctly. Our lighter sockets are slightly larger than the current ones, and I think thats all they carry now. I ended up going to a junkyard and getting a lighter asseblmy out of a 90's cavalier (I think thats what it was, this was a while ago). I grabbed the actual plug that plugs into the back of the lighter with a few inches of wire attached, the casing (screws onto the lighter socket from behind, holds it in place, the lighter socket, and the actual lighter. I snipped off my existing connector and spliced in the new one, and viola, I had an almost-new lighter that didnt short anything out! Plus, the new lighter looks a lot better than the huge one that was in the car.

Don't use the ash tray as a coin holder, and that won't happen. You'd be amazed at how well dimes will stack in the lighter socket.

Lighter socket in the ash tray? Mine is on the dash to the right of the steering wheel? I do know what you mean though. I was lucky enough to own a 1988 Dodge Daytona, and a penny fell into the lighter socket, blew the fuse immediately. It was a PITA to get out too
