Very impressed with "tired" motor!!!

Boys, I'm new here as far as posting goes but have gained undisputed knowledge by reading all your posts. So first off Thanks! Any way track finally opened today and I was expecting to run high 15's- low and behold after some timing adjustment-not into carb yet-the old bird pulled a 14.86 out of the bag-and I was on the brakes trying not to break out as my competitor was at least 2 car lengths behind me(he slept at the lights .633-gamblers race anyway) I only purchased the 86 Bird for $500, clear coat flaking badly, but no serious rust. Interior O.K., put in new dash pad and console to clean it up a bit. 305cid with 120,000mi, stock convertor & 700R4 which I have found mine shifts better 1.5qts. low on fluid-front seal leaks like a b*$%^.I put on a Edelbrock Dual plane performer intake & Holley 600 with vaccum secondaries (was given to me). Heddman full tube headers, with true 2.5" dual exhaust and 2 Flowmaster 40 series knockoffs (Flo-Thru is the name of the muffler $ 20 cheaper a peice, all metal fully welded mufflers) Rear tires are Mastercraft Avengers radials 245/60-15 aired down to 20psi. When I got the tires real hot all my short times 60' times were 2.08-2.09. I guess I'm real impressed because to this point have less than a grand in it. It's gonna be hard but I gotta stay focused on getting the car prepped for the 383 that keeps calling my name. Next week making my own sub frame connectors, gut interior to prep for cage, and channel rear floor pan so mufflers will have better ground clearance as they are right under my butt now. Thanks again for the reading and someone let me know what IROQ's and 5.0's run stock or with basic mods-gotta know where I stand!!

Wow, that's impressive.
You're running a vacuum distributor aren't you?

Stock IROCs range from low-mid 14s to low 16s depending on which motor they got.

Yes, all I did was change cap & rotor. I have another post somewhere about my problems with exhaust shop-they had vaccum advance pluged into intake side of carb so it was always advanced-I din't know this and we set the timing the car ran terrible no torqueat all. Luckily bro-in law caught it. We swithched it around reset timint yesterday to 36 degrees @ 2000rpm. Today I was running 15's and car had trouble starting when hot so we backed it down to 32 degrees then it pulled the 14's out of her hat. Never did preignite though at 36. For now I'm gonna get the adjustable secondaries kit for my holley and bring the fours in a little quicker- then maybe throw a cam at it and see what happens. I don't want to waste money but now I got the itch and would like to see what the tired ole 305 could do with some basic inexpensive mods. It was funny cause alot of the guys that roam the pits were asking what motor I had yadda, yadda, yadda and when I told them we all got a good chuckle. It's not fast by no means, but considering what it is, it also ain't to damn bad!

I'm glad Blackened is'nt the only one that hates Edelbrock carbs. I've personally seen 3 new ones installed and all 3 were replaced within 2 weeks with a Holley. They just don't have the umph everyone looks for.

what the heck is intake side of carb???? Should the vacuum advance be hooked up to the left side or right side of my 600cfi edelbrock?

What I meant with vaccum side of the carb was-carbs have different ports with which you plug your various vaccum hoses to. The bottom of the holley has a direct intake vaccum port which pulls all the time even at idle-good for power brakes as an example. Then they have the upper ports which don't get "activated" until you start to put a load on the motor -good for vaccum advance. It's kinda like the carb is a vaccum "valve" The more you put your foot in it, the more the "valve" opens thus pulling more vaccum.

after some research I found you can figure wich outlet is direct manifold and wich is the ported by using a pressure gauge or your finger...continuous vacuum is the manifold vacuum.....rev increase, ported..so the ported vacuum is best for the vacuum advance correct????

Unless your running a "race" motor & ignition system it's better to let the motor bring the advance in when needed so you don't take a chance of over timing(advancing)/preignition. Alot of the guys around here on a budget get the D.U.I. distributor and have it at full advance at about 2000-2500rpm. It was funny because usually I ran my timing up to where she pings then back it off a little. Used to go by ear and seat of the pants, usually had good luck. But now a little older a little wiser have found you can sneak out hp gains in the little places. Running 15's @36degrees full advance-Ran in the 14's @ 32degrees full advance. Hell I was just watching Nascar tech this morning and they said they egg out the carb mounting plate so they can slide the carb foward or back alittle on the intake-good for 1/4 hp to 1 hp. Stupid little stuff. I see your from council bluff, how'd you like the record highs last Mon/Tues we had 91 & 90degrees. And today they were calling for 1-3 inches of snow. This goofy weather has gots to go!

It's kinda like the carb is a vaccum "valve" The more you put your foot in it, the more the "valve" opens thus pulling more vaccum.
Hmm, I thought Vaccum went down with more RPM's, that sounds kinda shady.

Nice numbers though.

ok now I'm confused.... anyone else have any comments on vacuum ? I read edelbrocks "owners manual" and it seemed to contradict itself about where to hook up the vacuum advance....my car is running great...the Idle is real choppy and I thought maybe I had the advance hooked up wrong, guess I'll just try the other port and see what happens.
I just cut my hood yesterday....I couldnt get enough air with the small air cleaner I was using and the drop base didnt seem like the answere for me. Also I was having trouble keeping the engine bay temp down...the few hot days we had really had an effect on my power. I ordered a 2.5" cowel induction scoop, bought some heat shield for my plugs and fuel lines. Hope this helps......about killed me to cut my perfect hood, but oh well, Mods is what its all about....PS did you know our v-8 motors are sitting in the engine bay about 1.5 inches offd center to the passengers side.. Good thing the scoop is wider than the hole I cut.....

Bro-in-law tried to explain it like this-at idle with advance hooked to intake it is going to be pulling full advance all the time, then when you mash it, it will be an opposite effect because vaccum will lower putting advance back to an "idle like" condition. So when hooked to the upper port on the Holley at idle there's no pull on the advance, but when you mash it, it's like a crankcase evacuation kit, exhaust goes by pipe stuck into header and creates a vaccum sealing the rings better-well air is pulled through the carb and creates a vaccum that pulles the advance open.

thanks for the reply...I checked wich outlet I was hooked to and it's the right one ..vacuum increases with rpm's.....Sure wish I could get the specs on my cam without taking it out...oh well, Hey have a great day, and enjoy the nice weather tomorrow..
