Rearend replacement??

Rearend replacement?? The rearend is whining pretty loud. The shop tells me that it is probably the rearend bearings and gears. Is this a terribly difficult job for the at-home-mechanic? The shop tells me it'll be right around $1800.00 to replace the gears and bearings. They make it sounds like some form of mysterious science. If it is, then I don't want to get in over my head.

(Then again, with my luck, I probably don't need a 3500lb car over my head either. )

Any input is appreciated. (Even it is sarcastic input with a touch of humor).

Andy

Its actually kinda easy. Its all mechanical nothing to hard about it. If you can find someone locally that works on cars, offer him a 12 pack and it wouldn't take more than a afternoon. 1800 is way too high. 500-600 is a good price anything over 1 grand is outragous.

It's an exact science, but not mysterious. Special tools required, some experience helpful.

$1800 is "saw you coming" money, though. Look elsewhere, or get an entire used rear for a couple hundred and replace your current one.

I blew up the posi (gov-lock) in my '84 3.73/posi/disc axle; I bought my "original" axle, a 3.42/open/drum, from a junkyard for $100.

And for $1800 you could buy those special tools and do the gears yourself! Hell, you can replace the axleshaft bearings (misnamed as rear wheel bearings) yourself.

Thanks guys. This helps. So basicly, $500.00, a 12 pack, a new rear end, and someone with the right tools, I can get it installed. I guess I know what I have to do now. I think you folks just saved a newbie $1300.00. Huge thank you!

Thanks,
Andy
