i personally got rid of my third gen a while ago and went to an LT1 fourth gen which i've already sold (the guy picks it up monday) and am going to buy a new or newer ss or firehawk. it's hard not to with the performance difference in stopping and overall power.

I'd buy a new firehawk in a heart beat if i had the money to kill on it.

but as i don't i'm kinda stuck in a debate withmyself to supe up my '85 Trans Am or to look for a 79 Trans Am (what i really want) and drop the money into that instead.

2nd gens a heavier than these 3rds, BUT they ride SO much better. They had the ws6 handling package back then too. AND they don't have these wimpy rearends to contend with. I have both, only drive my 2nd on very nice summer weekends. The GTA is an everyday driver. Love um both, waighting till summer to find out which one is the fastest. If you realy want a 2nd, get one. You only go thru here once. That's what I keep telling my wife.

I would definately mod my car more. Though I would like to own another notchback Stang late 80s kind, though this time with a 302 in it.

Precisely my thinking... not to mention the fact that they're faster and I think they look better. (don't get me wrong, i still love my '85 )
Only problem is finding one! I really want a 79 pontiac 400/4speed, there were about 7,000 of those made. I'd take an 81 too cause they basically look the same but instead of the pont 400 they have a chevy 350 (with the 4 speed) I'm still talking about one of a little over 7,000 cars.
The other issue is once I do find it, for my price range i'll probably have to take 3 months of work before i can even drive it... That means keeping both cars for a while, something that i just dont' have the money for at this point.

What year is yours?

Believe it or not, I would invest now while the market sucks, wait for it to go back up, and then I will have gobs of money to get the new car I want AND get my IROC where I want it.

P.S. I am investing right now!

if you can find a good 79 t/a with an OLDS 403,go for that if you cant find a 400.my buddy has one,and over the past 2 years has got it from a low 15 second car to a mid 12 second STREET car.and it didnt take to much.he finally got the bottom end rebuilt(all stock),which stock came with a forged crank and i believe forged rods also.heres what hes done:
-cam(forgot specs, but its biiig),holley 700DP,performer RPM intake, full length headers into true dual exhaust with 40 series Flows, and most importantly heads from a 1970 olds 350.gained compression and better flow,as the stock heads are garbage and have huuuge combustion chambers.
his previous best with the mods above on a stock bottom end with 116000 miles on the clock was a 13.6@107,and thats with the stock 2.46-2.73 rear gear, although with posi.after he gets gears, his suspension redone(yes it still has the stock suspension, nothing special at all about it),and his bottom end redone he should be in the mid 12's N/A.comp ratio is only around 9.5:1 also.
there isnt really a huge aftermarket for these motors, but theres enough to get these cars to fly.

See my only problem with that is all the 403s came with Automatic, while all the 400s came with the 4-speed... I'm extremely partial to a manual transmision; makes it sooo much more fun to drive. So if i wound up buying a 79 w/403, i'd be tying myself into a tranny swap aswell. I am not sure about the 79, but i know on a 76 if you want to swap from auto to manual, you basically have to find a parts car and swap out everything but the engine to make the swap work, it's not just as simple as throwin a new tranny in... (not that that's a simple job!)

Soo my dream continues to be just that till the right car comes along
