What can I do for some more power...or dont touch it??
What can I do for some more power...or dont touch it??
My dad recently got into contact w/ this guy through work and he is selling his 89 Firebird...and I will more than likely be buying it. I was wondering however, if you guys recommend doing any other modifications to this thing as it has all stock internals. Reason being is that it had to meet SCCA street rules, but was allowed a .40 overbore. Heres all the info copied directly from the email my dad got..
Record:
¤ 3 trophy finishes at its only two SCCA Solo II National Championship appearances (5th in '98, 4th and 8th in '99 - both in ESP)
¤ '00 and '01 Detroit Council ESP Class Champion
¤ '99 SCCA CenDiv Series ESP Class Champion
Engine/Drivetrain:
¤ SLP air intake
¤ BBK 52mm TB
¤ TPIS Big Mouth plenum
¤ SLP Headers
¤ CarPro/Walker exhaust
¤ Auburn Pro Limited Slip
Suspension:
¤ Two sets of 16x10 wheels (one alloy, one steel) with Kumho tires
¤ OEM 16x8 wheels w/ Full Tread Kumhos (rain tires)
¤ Front strut brace
¤ Koni Sport "Yellow Tube" struts and shocks
¤ Camber plates
¤ VSE torque arm
¤ 1LE control arms
¤ Adjustable panhard rod
¤ Adjustable spring perches
¤ Variety of extra front and rear springs
Interior:
¤ A/C delete
¤ Audio delete
¤ Sparco driver seat
¤ TRW five point harness
¤ Roll bar
Price: $6500
Can anybody think of anything I should change? I'm kind of hesitant as I dont want to jinx myself w/ a car that has won a few championships. However, my parents told me they would buy this car for me (early grad present sort of) so I will have a good couple thousand bucks to spend, if needed. Any ideas or suggestions??? The guy said he had it dyno'ed, and my dad cant remember the exact numbers he said, but he said somewhere around 360 ft lbs at 2600 RPM (obviously built for low end torque). Like I said, to comply w/ SCCA rules it has to have stock internals (w/ a little modification) but was built by a professional race shop, it has an auto tranny and 3.73 gears (says its capable of 70 mph range in second gear).
So should I keep everything how it is for now and not jinx myself, or play the odds and upgrade a few things?? TIA.

If you're going to autocross or road race in stock class, there isn't a lot you probably can do other than finer suspension tuning (for the particular track).
I suppose you could tune the fuel system a little better and tweak the PROM, presuming it still uses the ECM.
There's always SOMETHING that can be tweaked just a little bit more, or at least until it breaks...

Sounds like a deticated race car to me.If your planning on getting into auto x'ing, great...but as a daily driver? I don't know what id do without an ac or a radio...Road race I guess. What's the asking price?
yeah, i think i can manage without an A/C being on the car...guess the car has what you'd call 2-40 air conditioning - - - roll down the 2 windows and drive over 40 miles an hour
But really, up here in michigan the weather never gets too unbearable, and i've always looked at AC as being evil. About there being no radio...thats a new question
And he is asking around $6500 but said he is flexible with the price.
And even if I don't get into auto x-ing, i still figured the way the car is right now would still be a good competitor on the street (i.e. off the line, light to light)...am i wrong? I figure anything is better than my RS that thinks backfiring at WOT is a cool thing to do... :lala:

It will probobally run good with that list of bolt ons. (mid 14s maybe?), and what you can't beat in a straight line will get jacked in the twisties
The only thing i'd do right away would be to get a larger cam.
