Why, when you can get a modded version for $550/pair good for .550 lift, 1.6 inch exhaust valves, good springs, screw in studs. Jim Pace is the place.

Thats not really an answerable question. There are so many different ways you complete a set of heads, some cheap, some not so cheap. Stock replacment napa valves, or super duper lightwieght flycut with a cherry on top valves, etc. If you were to get them bare you would need valves, springs, retainers, seals, and locks. Price out what you would want.
I think if it were me I would get them complete and just change the springs.

I shouldve said..using what stock Vortec heads came with..

That $550 price is if you bought it in the states..For me to get it here would cost almost twice as that (shipping, duty, brokerage fee, taxes)

Are you in Canada, Daz? I think I've seen your sig on the Cascade board. I would think that any parts not made in Canada, would be subject to all of the import stuff. The Vortech heads are standard truck parts for G.M., so you should be able to buy them locally. You would need to price out the parts to build up the bare heads and compare it with the price of the standard heads with stiffer springs from your local Chvy dealer. The main reason for going with the bare heads is if your are going to port and polish the heads, modify them to take a higher lift cam, and then use swirl polished valves, after market springs etc. In other words, if your are going to use the basic heads, and use aftermarket parts to build them, go for it. If you would just be building them up stock, it is probably cheaper to buy them complete from your Chevy dealer.

THe person selling it got it from the assembly line as bare.,,I know it can be bought locally but I havent seen one thats cheap enough..I guess bottom line would be is $100 cheap for bare Vortec heads..Its going to a Suburban with a ZZ1(300hp) copy..It currently have 76 cc heads though with a compression of 9:1

I think the $100.00 for bare Vortechs would be cheap, but buying all of the parts to build them up could be more expensive than the cost of complete assemblies from the dealer. You would just have to go in with a parts list and see what the prices are.

Buying all the parts and putting it together is really not that expensive or time consuming. Thats practically what I did with the vortecs on my motor now, since all the factory stuff was garbage, especially the springs.......you end up replacing almost everythingo on them anyways. Here's an idea of some prices

valve locks (cheap stock type, thats all you need): $6.95
stock retainers: $40??
Teflon seals: $20
Friend that has the right cutter bit to cut down the guides to accept the teflon seals.....$?$?$? Mine was free of course
Springs: I used K-motion K700's, which are good to bout .520 lift, and they only cost $42
Stock replacement valves 1.94/1.5 valves: $100 approx.?

Thats about all I can think of......except maybe a valve job......but I think bare casting already have a valve job.........right?
That only comes up to like $169. So $100+209 sounds pretty good for a complete set of vortecs
