For the rad, I would empty it all the way and then run 2-3 flushes of hose water, and then finally fill it with Distilled Water, Antifreeze and Water wetter. Make sure it is filled up, in you flushes and when you fill it up for the last time.

Np, thanks for the thanks!

I also use some STP I think oil fluch, which I love because the power, frictional loss and milage gained. Somethinkg to think of when you change your oil the next time.

Jeff,

did you clean out your resevoir too? Personally, I couldn't get all the flakey-brown-crust out of the upper portion (where the fluid never gets to but I imagine the vapors do)... Anyway, that ended up causing me some problems because it flaked off and contaminated the new fluid. If that happens to you (I'd make sure I checked the fluid level for a few days to make sure it's not leaking, etc), try some of the radiator flush stuff you can buy at an autoparts store or like k-mart... helps loosen up the stuff in the resevoir and i would imagine helps clean stuff in your radiator that you cant see.

Here's a scary story; don't know if it's true or not. I was on vacation in Maryland (OC!), and while the woman was showering, I was having a beer on the balcony and reading the complimentary paper... damn I want to go back!! Anyway, it looked like a local rag to me, but, they had an automotive section. They had a guy answering questions in it, looked like a daily column.

A dude wrote in to say that he put motor flush in his high mileage engine, and then changed the oil. While he was passing a truck a few weeks later, he heard a loud clattering noise, and thought it was the semi truck. He got a bit further and his car stopped- the motor seized. A shop tore it down and said that it had starved itself for oil, and the guy wanted to know why.

The columnist's reply was that running the motor flush thru a high mileage engine can cause all the gunk to loosen up- and that the gunk probably clogged his oil pump's pickup screen.

Any truth to this???

I'm sure that's possible if the engine is really gunked up bad. But, how do you know it wasn't going to plug up anyway--without the engine flush.

a good way to clean coolant tanks is to just take them out, put some buckshot in there, and fill it with just a little soapy water. then just shake it around until its clean, then reinstall. just make sure you get all the buckshot out...
