oh where can this oil leak be?
oh where can this oil leak be?
ok i notice that when i get hard on the gas my car makes a huge smoke screen so when i got home i checked it out. i found that it was on the passenger side of my engine and it was coming from high up on the engine so i thought it might be my valve cover gasket so i bought some new ones and switched it out and i still have the same problem . i already checked my distributer o ring and its good and my intake bolt are not the problem either what else is on that side that can dump oil onto my exhuast ? thanks matt
ok .. i guess the reason i am not getting any responses is because i did not give enough detail so i went and check it out again. ok i found that it is located in the back corner of the passenger side of my engine .. my plug wires , my A frame ,my starter and everything else in that area is soaked with oil. what could it be??
if its on the passengers side i guess its not the oil filter that loose, how about the oil pan is that maybe loose? it could the oil pressure plug that goes into the block around the distributor?
r u for sure its motor oil? i dont know much about engines but i am just trying ti help.

ok .. after playing with it for a while ..i think it is coming out of the dipstick on the top and the bottom of it .. it is acting like there is so much pressure in the oil pan that it is forcing the oil out.. so i checked my PVC system ....its ok .. where is that pressure vavle that you are speaking of .. i don't see it around my distributor?? .. is there anything else that can leak that bad ??
What happened in between when it didn't leak and when it did?
well i am not sure .. i just bought the car and it already had the problem .... i did clean the whole side up and i started the car while underneth it .. it did not leak a drop ... so i went for a test drive and after putting some strain on the motor .. sure enough it started smoking really bad .... when i got back .. once again the passenger side of the block was covered
do you have a t fitting on the back of your motor? it should have a couple of lines coming out of it. i would check this after you give the car a good work out to see if it's coming from there. if not it may be coming from the back intake manifold somwhere. the oil pan is not pressurized with oil so that should at least take that out of the picture. i would look around the distributor or the back of the head or intake. hope you find it.

Excessive blow-by could cause the symptoms you described.
It would pressurize the oil pan and could cause oil to be blown out the dipstick, or past the valve cover gasket, or oil pan gasket.
The PCV valve can't keep up with the blow-by if it's excessive.
Might be able to pull the fresh air tube from the valve cover and have someone power-brake eng. Check if air/smoke comes out hole in valve cover. If it is, then the PCV can't keep up.
If excessive blow-by is the problem, only fix is a rebuild.
Do a compression test. Then do it again after you squirt some oil in each cyl thru spark-plug hole. If compression jumps up after oil is squirted into cyl, your rings are shot.
Good luck!

Any chance you didn't get a good seal when you replaced the valve cover gasket ? I know it doesnt take much of a leak to make a mess. I would try removing the gasket again, make sure the surfaces are clean. Then try one more time....it can't hurt.

Last time I had a motor that pumped oil out of the dipstick tube it was extreme blowby, caused by a broken piston!
Piston actually had a hole in it (the guy who owned it before me ran sh*t gas and drove it hard all the time, with 10.5:1 compression and cast pistons. It was only a matter of time before the constant detonation pinched the top ring, after that the ring just started to come apart and take piston chunks with it!
I was surprised that the bore was not scored, and just replaced the one piston and ring set and sold the car to someone else.
(by the way, it was a 66 pontiac 389, and I was able to change the piston without removing the motor)

on old cars, it's common to find the engine bay covered in oil. can buy special UV Dye & UV light kits to trace leaks.
but for backyard mechanics, spraying the engine bay with a couple cans of engine degreaser and washing off with a garden hose usually cleans the bay up enough to be able to see where the leak is coming from.
(engine degreaser is nothing special. walmart, autozone, pepboys, etc should all have it in stock for $1 or $2 per spray can)

I have the same problem as described. Now I have some investigating to do. I have 3 oil soaked plugs so blowby may be a problem but the problem started after I relashed my rockers. Also, I split a heater core hose also while doing the relashing so there was clouds of smoke coming from my car because the coolant was going directly onto my manifold.
