Starter problem

Sometimes when I crank my car to start it, the starter will continue cranking the engine till it starts, even if I release the key from the start position.

What is going on? Is the starter gonna stay running one of these times?

I second that. It sux when it finally decides to stick for good. Then you either let the battery run down, because you have no tools, or keep a pair of pliers in you car (which everyone should) to disconnect the battery, or even yet, repace the solinoid and not have to worry about it.

@!#$%&*!

Well, you guys were right and I waited too long to fix it. ARGH

I tried to start it and the engine didn't crank and the solenoid started buzzing loud as all h*ll. I turned the igntion off and the horrible racket continued. I popped the hood and the starter was letting the smoke out. Of course I didn't follow StngKlr's advise and put a pliers in the glove box. Had to run inside the minit-mart and get theirs to disconnect the battery. ARGH x2

Todays lesson: If you know something is failing, don't ignore it, FIX IT before it bites your @ss!

Yeah, its all my fault though and that gripes me the most.

Its not fixed yet, just unloaded it off the flatbed a little bit ago.

Tomorrow I should be able to get it done.

The new starter is in with a minimum of cussing and tool throwing.

Compared to the old starter it cranks the engine really fast. I'm not surprised though. I figure the motor brushes and the contacts in the solenoid were all burned pretty bad after 170K miles. The old starter used to drag the voltage down to 8V when cranking. I forgot to look and see how far the new one is dropping the voltage but I'd bet its not as bad.

Anyhow, no more shoe sole express for me.

EDIT: I forgot to ask about the shim. They supply a shim with the starter. I used it thinking a little loose is better than too tight. Any feedback on that? There aren't any odd gear noises when cranking.

LMFAO......That's why I don't have all of my garage sheetrocked.....the tool damage factor!

The way that I understand to check for the proper clearance is to use a .125" drill bit or whatever you have that size between the gears crossways. I had rather be like you said too loose than too tight. No noise is good.

I can't remember Brent......what ride do you have?

lol, sheetrock wouldn't take much of a project to get ruined.

I saw the clearance test on the instructions but I couldn't get the flywheel shield off. Don't ask.

Out of curiousity, that leads me to another question. On manual trans cars you can't get a feeler in there. So how do you check the clearance?
