My 1991 TA with 5 speed is giving me some no crank problems.

SOMETIMES when I turn the key with the clutch down nothing happens.

If I get a jump from a battery or from my charger it starts right up.

I checked the battery with a specific gravity tester and all cells read good.

I put the battery on the charger and the fully charged light is lit.

Does it sound like the starter solinoid is going bad? If so, why will it still start with a jump?

I had a similar situation. Car wouldnt start. Take a jump right away. The battery showed over 12V, but when I had them load tested....it was gone. I also had the same type problem with my ignition cylinder.

So with the problem with your ignition cylinder, would the car take a jump and start??

If not, looks like I might head to the battery store tomorrow.

I know that sometimes a battery can show good, but still not produce enough amps. But why would it not crank at all and then crank easily with a jump?

I dont know but thats what mine did. I hate electrical problems. With the ignition cylinder, it wouldn't start, then after a while it would go. Have your battery load tested.

I had the same problem. I replaced the Ign. sw. on the coluum and it went away.

 

But Dyno Don, would a jump get the car started with a bad ignition switch???

Think I might have a bad battery.

Car starts right up with a jump.

 

This seems to be a pretty common problem. My 92 was doing it till I replaced the starter, then it stopped. I understand the solenoid takes a lot of heat from the exhaust and kind of cooks it self. My new starter was starting to do it again when the weather warmed up, so I put heat sheild wrap around the starter, no problems since.

 

Have you load tested that battery yet?

 

I had the battery load tested today. Said it actually handles more load than normal!!

So I dropped the car off with my mechanic. Since the problem only occurs like once or twice a week he really won't be able to find it, I'm thinking.

But he is going to check the clutch switch first. Maybe bypass it and let me drive the car this way for some time. If the problem goes away then it is the switch. Otherwise I am thinking the starter.
