LB9, one of the reasons the L69 comes close is the gears the car came with, nothing really to do with the motor.
I had the LG4 when I first got my car, good thing I didn't see any Z06s, they would be looking at my rear.

i would agree that the LB9 was the best stock 305, but the L69 responds much better to aftermarket parks. being carbed, it is easier to tune and maintain. however,i may be biased on this one just because i love carbs...

LG4!!
It's certainly not the fastest, but I've never seen an engine that could take a beating like that one. (Of course, for only 150-170hp, it doesn't hardly have the power to wear itself out).
My first car was an 87 camaro with the LG4. Ran the **** out of it...over and over and over again. 60 mile long trips at full throttle the whole way (don't ask...), several times. Super severe overheat (entire cooling system went bone dry). Still runs, no cracked heads/ gasket probs.
Only fault in it, to this day, is leaky valve seals. Uses about a quart every 2000 miles.
This fall, it will be getting swapped into it's third thirdgen chassis (again...don't ask...chassis's haven't been as durable as this motor, let's leave the details at that).
I won't tell you what kind of highway mileage I got with that motor, for fear of being called a liar, but I've been tuning my current 89 LB9 engine for over a year trying to get near that mark (I've done everything short of a custom prom...haven't got that figured out yet).
Although for power, and torque band, I'd have to go with the LB9, even though my LB9 is the one with the wimpy cam (i think the 89 LB9 with the wimpy cam has the same cam as the 87 LG4...anybody know for sure?)

If I had to pick one I would pick an LG4 or an L69 because they are carbed and cheaper to mod. You can easily and cheaply remove the computer, get a better intake and carb, and pick up some serious power.
My vote goes to the L03 - sure, maybe its cuz thats what I have, but....
I'll tell ya what, my engine runs great - only problem is a nice little exhaust leak. And I havent treated it the best... Winter driving, cold WOT's (well, at least I finally broke that habbit!!). I just wish it had some more power...

I voted the last choice, because the better 305 is the one that's had done to it what the factory should have done... like mine.

Differences between these motors (for killjoy):
82-87 LG4: Carbed, 416 heads, tiny exhaust, peanut cam, choked. 82-84 8.5:1 comp ratio, 85-87 9.5:1 comp ratio. 87 centerbolt heads, roller cam (the most desirable LG4).
85-92 LB9: Tuned port fuel injection, 416 heads(85-86) - 081 heads (87-92). Auto LB9's were choked (cept 85) and manual ones got all the goodies. 85-89 were mass airflow and 90-92 were speed density type computers.
88-92 L03: Throttle body fuel injection, 187 swirl port heads-great for heavy duty towing but not top end performance. They got the peanut cam and were a speed density ECM system til they;re demise in 1995.
82-83 LU5: The forgotten one. Cross-Fire fuel injection (dual throttle body injection). 416 heads, once again underdeveloped from the factory.
As you can see there arent really that much of a difference between the 305's cept for the intake systems.

TPI is the king of 305, However they are very expensive to mod, if you are looking for a solid stock engine (get a tpi 350) but as for 305 the LB9 is the best.

LB9 = TPI (Tuned Port Injection) 305.This is the one that looks like it has a spider thing sitting on top of it. Coolest looking one in my opinion. Available 85-92.
L03 = TBI (Throttle Body Injection) 305. This one looks like a carbureted engine until you remove the air cleaner and see a funny looking 2 barrel throttle body with 2 injectors pointing down where the carb would normally be. Available 88-92
LG4 = Computer Controlled Carbureted 305. This engine looks like alot of other GM Computer-Carbed cars from the 80s. 4 Barrel Quadrajet carb with tons of vacuum hoses and wires going all over the place. Very cheap to mod though. Available 82-87.
L69 = Same as LG4, except this is the High Output version. Not sure of everything thats different, but the easiest way to tell it apart from the LG4 is the air cleaner has2 air inlet snorkels, instead of 1 like the LG4. Also has a bigger cam, I beleive. Available 82-86.
LU5 - CFI (Cross Fire Injection) 305. This is probably the rarest of the 305s, since it was only available for the first couple years of the thirdgens (82-83 only) The intake looks really funny, it kinda looks like a carbed intake, except instead of a carb being in the middle, there are 2 small throttle bodies on oposite corners of the engine. This also makes for a funny looking oval shaped air cleaner, too. Available 82-83.
L98 - TPI (Tuned Port Injection) 350, looks externally identical to the TPI 305. Only other V8 I can think of that was available in thirdgens. Only 350 available in thirdgens. Available 86-92
Hope this helps. Theres alot more info on the Tech Data page.

How many seconds?
Vader/DM91RS: Ni-ni-nine second 305? Are we talking 0-60MPH?
Just kidding, but I would like some details. Like what kind of power adder(s), and head info, if you've got it. Thanks!

I think his names Preston Smith. He used to run a supercharger but he's switched over to a big *** turbo. Not sure if he's gotten it back down the nines yet or not. I'd heard he's running milled AFR 190's, but don't quote me on that. Do a search on the Power Adder board, he's been mentioned several times there.
