this is a doozy!!!
this is a doozy!!!
hey guys, heres the spill...
305 carbed, non comp controlled....no special mods, yet...this is why
THE DAMN THING WONT EVEN START!!!
after wearing the battery down from trying to get this engine to turn over, I still get nothing...rotation, but no go bye bye!!
strong smell of gas from under hood..and I am getting spark..I know this because while turning dist. to see if it would help, I got a wake-up zap!!...just a wire not on good, that wasnt the prob...so...any Ideas would not only be appreciated but whoever gives me the one that starts the car can have a Edelbrock Torker 2 intake for 350 chevy....no lie..its that important!!!...thanks!

My guess is it's not timed correctly and it's flooded too, have you had this engine running before? or is it a new install? Have you had the distribtor out? Check to make sure the rotor in the distributor is pointing at the number 1 spark pulg tower when the piston is at TDC on the compression stroke. Make sure all the plug wires are run correctly in the right firing order 18436572. If all this is correct and you have spark, fuel and air it WILL start unless the cam timing is way off. Charge the battery good and try again after you check the timing, hold the pedal to the floor to clear a flooded condition if you still have a strong smell of gas. Good luck. I'll take that intake now please
Hey Stang...
thanx for the input!!
I havent had this engine running before, But I HAVE senn it run once
I am just about to go check the dist and the timing...I hope it works...and if it does...Ill be back to find you for info on where to send the manifold....cuz I wasnt kidding!!!
one more question...please
on the distributor, where the BAT wire hooks in.......where sould that wire come from??
should I wire it to the fusebox???...Starter???....I want to have a good idea, if this other doesnt work, where to try to run that wire from.....cuz i get spark, but I am not sure if the wire thats on it is the correct one!!!...again...thanx!!!

Errrr...
1. Get the battery charged/replaced what not...
2. Its flooded now for sure...
-Take off the air cleaner let it "air out"
3. Moving the distributor as an initial move usually isn't
a good plan unless you have reason to suspect somebody
moved the distributor or it wasn't installed correctly :-)
3. You don't know if you have "spark" unless you
use one of them neon tubes or pull a plug.
A. Unless you seriously suspect something...
Put the distributor back to where it was...
B.Your initial move is correct... check for spark
Pull the #1 plug, take a look, black and oily, replace em all
Tan ?, place it against a ground and have someone crank it
Shock the beejesus out of yourself while properly grounded ?
replace the wires.
Big blue spark? your good, you have spark...
Now tell me what it does...

I'm not sure about the BAT. wire, but urbman is correct about checking for spark, you should pull #1 plug and check for spark by grounding it on the engine block or another good ground and have somebody spin the engine over while you look for spark, if the plugs are dirty and fuel soaked get new ones because they are fouled and won't properly conduct a spark across the plug gap, and speaking of grounds make sure the engine is grounded to the frame good or you might not get a good spark.
Hey guys......
Thanx for all the good replies.....I am anxious to try them all....
hope they work......if not.....not only will somebody get a manifold....but an entire engine as well.....right after I put the damn thing in a crate and ship it!!!!!!!...
then, ill get another engine.......well see what becomesof it!!!!!!!!
see yall soon!!!!

Actually, a different engine in the same car may do the same thing if the problem is with the wiring.
And for reference, it's "Deusey" - short for Deusenberg. That was an old performance car from teh mid-late '20s and up. They were nicknamed "Deusey" by their enthusiastic owners, and it caught on in general, meaning something different or special.
I'm with StangKiller on checking the static timing. And of course you'd replace the plugs if they are wet with fuel, since the insulators will conduct all the spark current to ground and provide no spark. While the plugs are out, let the engine air out a little or crank it over more to blow excess fuel out of the cylinders.

forsure check your timing, and see if that is it, if its not, do a compression test to see if its not a serious internal problem, that will let you know if you have a burnt valve or what not, but sounds like a timing problem to me, good possibility the timing chain jumped a gear
