Air Pump, stay or go READ

Air Pump, stay or go READ

My Car: 1992 Camaro RS, TBI, 305, AUTO

My car is making a rattling noise that is coming from either the ac compressor or air pump. I know I want to keep the AC compressor but I don’t know if I should keep my air pump. What are the benefits and disadvantages or removing the air pump. Also I live in Florida and we have no emissions testing.

Benefits = better on environment

Disadvantages = Less horsepower, more weight, more clutter in engine compartment. FL doesn't give a **** about that stuff, rip it off. Just make sure you plug the holes in the manifolds well.

I live in both FL and in MA, i am registered in MA, but that may change due to FL's emissions laws.. or lack there of. But even in MA, TPI & TBI cars don't need to smog pump, only the carbeurated ones.

Far as your rattling noise goes... i would imagine you could tell which is which easily considering they are on oposite sides of the engine.

If it's the A/C, take the smog pump off anyways, hehe

Anyone want to give me instructions on removing the air pump?

There is a tech article for this, I believe you will need a longer belt also...

Take out the AIR pump it's nothing to worry about, I'm from South Florida and haven't had any issues with emissions either. Make sure to plug the holes very good, even better get a set of headers..

Hope this helps, once again there is a tech article for this

I have that same rattling noise, does it do it when you are stopped and in drive, then stop when you put it in neutral?????

Leave the air pump. You'll get something like 1 or 2 horsepower from taking it off, and save a few pounds. This isn't worth the effort, nor is it worth affecting the resale value/originality of the car. With the pump there it looks more stock, it stays more original. I used to figure that you may as well take it off, but now I don't see much reason to. It really doesn't look bad, and the air lines aren't huge or annoying. Just my opinion.

IMO the only real benefit of taking it off is you'll have less clutter under the hood. If you spend a lot of time working on your car, you'll appreciate not having it in the way. It's not exactly a free mod either: the belt and plugs for the manifold are gonna cost you around $40. To me it's worth it just to get the clutter out from under the hood.
I've always taken the air pump off. I did it to all three of my fbods. Of course, I spent last weekend reinstalling it on my GTA, so it will pass emissions when I move out to CA.

Oh yeah, and the air pump is right below the AC compressor on a serpentine setup. On a V-belt setup they are on opposite sides.

Would anyone be willing to tell me what I will need to plug and with what I should plug it. Detailed instructions on everything I would need to remove would be great.

As previously stated, there is a tech article about this: https://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/t...rpentine.shtml Also, use the search function to look for more air pump info.

yeah, the air pump is the one beneath the compressor. If you're wondering which one makes the noise, use a stethescope on each one, that should easily tell you which one it is.

If you dont have one handy...just put a wrench or a screwdriver on it and listen....not as effective as the stethescope...but it works ok...

When I pulled all the air pipes out of my car and left the air pump it really was making a racket like a severly out of adjustment rocker took it off and no problems and no noise
the belt I used was 97 5/8" long
