Some tips to improve gas mileage?

Well since I've driven my 6 I've never really been able to brag about excellent gas mileage.

I get about 190 miles per tank on reg. gas (87oct.) What is that, 15mpg?

Usually drive it with 91 octane and get 160-170.

Not sure what I can do to improve it. Did the fuel filter recently. What should I be getting per tank?

Thanks for any advice. ..

98,

There are several things you can do:

Maintain tire inflation;

Align front wheels;

Inspect brakes for stuck calipers and drum hardware;

Change differential oil to synthetic;

Install a clean air filter;

Install a new oxygen sensor;

Set base timing a few more degrees advanced and make sure your detonation sensor is working;

Get rid of the Jet PROM and burn your own. You can drastically improve the highway spark advance and fuel trim modes yourself. Glenn was getting 30MPG with his V-8 on the road with a custom PROM;

Use synthetic engine lubricants;

Increase coolant temperature to maintain 200°F running under normal conditions;

Maintain the EGR system to get the greatest spark advance at cruise;

Avoid high octane fuel unless your compression or engine load require it.

High octane fuel contains less energy. Don't use the fuel guage as a measure of mpg. It isn't accurate. You need to keep track of mileage and gallons of fuel added for 4 or so tank fulls to get an accurate estimate of mileage.

Excellent tips, few Q. ..

1. Maintain tire inflation
What psi should i be at?

2. Maintain the EGR system
How do i do that, new valve?

3. PROM - burn your own
Not sure how, is that the same as
what ed wright (fast chip) does?

1. several thoughts ...
With good rolling stock...
After an alignment...
Start manufacturers spec...
Take a piece of chalk mark a line across the width of
the tires every 60 degrees or so...
drive around a bit
Note if the line is wearing away evenly
If the line is worn on the edges and less in the center
add 2 psi and try again...

Warning you will go pretty high with this and may not
like the ride as much ...

2. Get a Helms, use search, covered a few days ago

3. This is a complement...
Start with the first post in DIY Prom board...
Roughly...
Dyno time + your own chip = good
off the shelf chip without data from your engine = waste of money

My ride is bumpy as it is. .. so no worries.

As for the chip, came with the car, had it on for years, doubt it did much anyways, took it out.

Doing some reading on DIY. ..
