How much NOS can I handle?

On my stock engine how big of a shot of NOS can it handle? I won't be using it all the time just at the track. I want it for a quick boost until I can get the 350. So how much would be safe for occasional usage?

I don't know much about Nitrous, but I would be afraid of anything over 75HP shot.

How many miles on the car? A nice healthy, perfect running engine can handle a 150 shot ok.

My car has 65,000 miles on it and is very healthy. I know they make those fool proof NOS kits now of days and I am looking for a quick boost until the engine comes in.

I would go a 100 shot myself just to be safe.

Yes, a 100 HP shot is safe for your stock engine. I've run NOS on several otherwise stock cars now and have never had a problem. Actually, I've run up to 125 HP kits on stock engines. Anything more than that though, and you're asking for trouble. Just remember two very important things; never spray unless you're at WOT and never spray below 2K RPM.

Yea I know about the below 2000 rpm and WOT thing. Thats why I was looking at one of those fool proof ones that won't inject unless you are at WOT and above 2000 rpm. Thanks for all the help for those who responded. You got me thinking

What's NOS?
You mean Nitrous Oxide Systems the company? You run the company??? WOW! Hey, can you hook me up with some Nitrous parts for cheap or maybe set up a group purchase? How come you guys, being a division of Holley and all, don't advertise on this site? You should email Dirk if you run NOS and set up a banner or something because that's an awful large company and lots of ricers use the acronym for your company as reference to the usage of nitrous oxide, I know, they sound like morons doing that but wow I'm glad to see that the guy who runs NOS is on this board taking interest in the thirdgen!

:sillylol:

On the V6 forum, we had a guy that said "Who wants NOS? Call Nitrous Express, they have the best prices!" Duh. Could you see me calling Nitrous Express for a NOS kit? They'd laugh their *** off! Hey, that's a good idea, maybe I'll do it for kicks.

Everyone's a comedian. Sorry, I should have typed "NOS kits" or "No2" or "nitrous".

I've never had the urge to find out. Aparently, it can cause serious harm to your engine.

NOS meaning Nitrous Oxide. It is commonly refered to as NOS on the streets. If I said NO people would not understand what I was saying. NOS is a street slang as well as a company brand. Anyways I guess I will go with a 100 shot. My engine runs perfect. No skips doesn't drip any oil. The only thing is it has a mild valve seal leak at cold start up. Other than that it runs like new with low miles. I think it will handle it. By the way for the person asking about why not to turn on "NOS" below 2000 is it will blow the engine.

not a nitrous expert at all, but from what I've learned is any "good" engine can take 150. The big killer on nitrous is timing and fuel starvation. At WOT, if your fuel pressure drops... well, just make sure that doesnt happen.

NOS could also very easily stand for Nitrous Oxide System (like one installed in your car) Easier than explaining "my car has a nitrous oxide system installed". Rather say "my car has spray" or I got NAAAWWSSSS

I agree with not running NITROUS without a throttle switch.

Sometimes, it's OK to run nitrous under 2,000 RPM, for a short time. Camaroracer1992 had a setup that allowed him to leave the line with the nitrous on. This got him to a 13.18, with a TBI'd 305.

So what do you guys recommend for a setup to use nitrous? What should it have? What settings should it be at? What kind of gain in the 1/4 can I expect from a 100 shot of nitrous?

Thank you. It's been a while since I've refered to nitrous oxide in scientific terms. You caught my spelling mistake. Be proud, for you must be a genious. Some day, I hope to be as clever as you.

I suggest that you buy a complete kit. That will take any guesswork out of the equation. They make kits for almost any application. All my experience has been with NOS kits. I highly recommend their products. You can check them out here.

As for performance, here are some Ό mile examples:

’89 5.0L Mustang – before nitrous; 14.80 @ 96 MPH … after 100 HP shot; 13.50 @ 106 MPH

’88 Formula 350 – before nitrous; 15.40 @ 92 MPH … after 100 HP shot; 14.10 @ 101 MPH

’79 Z-28 (350 4bbl) – before nitrous; 15.50 @ 89 MPH … after 125 HP shot; 13.70 @ 107 MPH

Those are all cars that I owned. The “after” numbers would have been better in each scenario had I spent more money on the suspensions (excessive tire-spin in all cases).
