Fresh rebuild..now 60lb + Oil Pressure?????
Just got my motor in. Had a melling HV oil pump put in. Engine starts with 60lbs pressure..then warms up to about 30 at idle... will hop all over when I put the gas to it.
Here's the dilemma. When I really put the gas to it...car REALLY smokes from the engine compartment (embarassing). Opened the hood I see oil on the left side of the engine near the smog stuff. Oil on the plug wires... a few small drops burn off the headers and no more smoke.
Only happens when I get the RPMS up.
Comments / recommendations please.....

Maybe a combination of leaking valve covers and the rings not being seated yet, which makes crankcase press rise and blow oil past seal.
Done a compression check lately?
Taken it on a long drive yet to seat the rings?

Valve covers gaskets look ok, no leaks. I was thinking that oil was coming out of the dipstick tube. Looks very likely. I should take a long drive then..right.
Thought maybe the mechanic didn't change the oil pump setup to high volume...not high pressure. Wouldn't be the first thing he missed on this swap.
Guess the pressures are pretty normal?!?!

The mechanic who did the install is going to check everything out. This engine..cold, is off the gauge 60+++++. Warms up...at 1500 rpm it's between 50-60+ lbs.
Will check the PVC setup.

Had same problem on car. Gunned it, and all of a sudden smoke starts coming out of my engine compartment. One of my valve cover breathers didnt seal well enough, and I got oil on my nice freshly painted headers. Put better sealing ones, not a problem. I have a high volume pump on mine, and mine starts at 60+ and trickles down to 30. Check your oil fill cap and such first.

Mine runs 80psi cold, warmed up 58psi @ 1800rpm, 30psi @ idle with 10W30 Mobil 1. Same oil pump as yours.

Well, you had better be careful with those high volume oil pumps. When acc. hard have someone keep their eye on the oil pressure gauge. Those H/V pumps like to empty the oil pan pretty fast which might uncover the oil pump pickup. This will give you a fluctuating oil pressure gauge because of a momentary loss of oil pressure. Not good!! The problem with those H/V pumps is that they just cant bypass oil fast enough.

I thought they should only be used with an aftermarket pan..something like Vader has that holds 22 quarts and cost 75.00 for an oil change...

Sounds like I don't have too much to worry about. Will check all the stuff sticking out of the valve covers.
BTW..the mechanic billed me for 6 quarts of oil....stock oil pan is 5 qt right? Or is there some requirement for additional oil during the course of putting a rebuild back in a car?

First thing you need to do is clean off any oil that has leaked out. Do a once over and check to see if valve cover bolts are tight, dip stick tube is seated in block, and PCV is on right. your mechanic billed you for 6qts of oil cuz that is what it took to fill your new engine. When you change your oil in your car you never get all of it out. some of it clings to the engine and sits on top of the heads. This is the reason for the extra qt on a new rebuild. Just check oil everyday for a about a week and monitor it. too much oil pressure can cause gaskets to blow out too. Some people think a lot of oil pressure means a healthy engine but its not always the case. just put a new GM crate engine in my car and my pressure on startup is around 55-60, it will get lower as oil heats up.

PROBLEM SOLVED
PCV hose was too short and not clamped. Put a longer hose on and clamped it solved the problem.....BUT...it also pointed out that one of the valve cover breather gaskets was a little to small...because the pressure resulting from a tighter PCV system popped out the pcv breather on the passenger side. Wrapped some electrical tape around the gasket and no more leaks.
No more embarassing smoke pouring off of my headers after I get on the gas.
