Clutch - Starting Position

As with all the manual-tranny cars i've driven, you have to push the clutch all the way down as to push some button that i've never seen so the car will start. For some reason in my 88 Firebird, you can press it all the way and it wont start, you have to, let's say, "pump" it a few times, then push it all the way and you'll hear a noise that sounds like you just broke a piece of plastic in half, and then it will start after you push it to this point. Very strange, is there something i need to replace? The car has a new clutch..

FB,

There is a safety switch on the clutch pedal arm, similar to the brake light switch on the brake pedal arm. It sounds like the problem is there.
