I was at the Carlisle show talking to a Vendor and they had some cams. I was looking to see if they had the Comp 268XE, they didn't and also had some non name brand cams. The lady said that the Co. that makes Crane Cams, owns Comp Cams, and some others. She said the only real difference is that Comp can make custom grind cams. I was looking in the catalog at a non name brand one.
Here are the specs 450/460 lift .224/.224 114 lobe separation. It's a little less lift than the 268XE, but for only $85 with lifters seems like a really good deal.
I put the #s in DD2000 and it showed minimal difference. Anyone think this is an ok way to go?

I think for an extra 30$$ or so I would go the x/e268, I cant recall the specs off hand, but it is a dual pattern cam, which is always good, also, it has a little more lift and a little shorter duration on the intake.

Crane Cams and Comp Cams are separate companies.
Crane Cams has a large Manufacturing facility and does production work for lots of companies.
The cam she was trying to sell you is a copy of the GM
350"L-82" cam used on corvettes in the 60's 350/350hp
and low compression corvette and Z/28 350's in the 70's
GM part # 3896962
The comp extreme 268 XE will operate in the same rpm range but will make more power than that old
design and requires better springs than stock because of it's faster action.

Are you really sure she's full of it? Cause I bet many of you may not know that Ford owns Volvo and Jaguar. So it doesn't seem too far fetched that Crane owns Comp. The Comp Cam is actually $80 more. I see what you guys are saying though.
I'm tryin to get it as a Bday present, and I'm sure my Dad would go for the cheaper one, but $160 is a bit much I think. But I don't want to cheap out, if it's really going to hurt me, just not worth it for the labor involved.

I happen to know the people personally who own Comp Cams... they do have some outside investors, but the investors have no control. It's not impossible that some of the same investors have money in both companies, but that has nothing to do with the actual product itself. Both Comp and Crane buy their cam blanks from any of several vendors (Elgin, Melling, etc.) and grind their own from there; both of them contract out their higher-volume custom pieces to houses that specialize in the processes involved (like Comp's investment-cast steel rocker bodies, for instance); and both of them will do custom grinds, as will any of the other major cam companies such as Lunati and Ultradyne. BTW, I used to live in Memphis which is where Comp, Lunati and Ultradyne are located ( as well as Eagle, PI, TCI, and about half of the rest of the performance industry), and I have done some contract engineering work for Comp, as well as 2 of my brothers and a number of friends working there, so I can speak from direct actual experience as opposed to hearsay.
The specs do indeed sound like a 962 cam replica which is a total POS. It's not as bad as the 151 cam (221°/221° @ .050", .447"/.447") but it's not much better. It is in no way close to the XE cam; it has the typical very lazy factory valve action, as opposed to the "intensity" of the XE series. Don't lower your expectations if you can help it, stick with the XE.
