Can't find CTS, need help!

I know where it is SUPPOSED to be, but it doesn't seem to be there (305 TPI)! Can anyone post a pic with it circled so I know if I'm just being dumb, or if something really ****ed up is going on?

Which one? There should be one in each head between the spark plugs. It's pretty damn easy to find, so if you don't see it I'd assume it isn't there. Look for a plug, or perhaps you have some oddball head that wasn't drilled for them. All stock tpi heads will have the sensors.

There is also one in the intake manifold in the front below the throttle body, also easy to find. There may be two there.

The secondary fan control on cars with dual electric fans is in the right cylinder head. The temp sender for the dash instrument is in teh left head. The CTS for the ECM and primary fan control is in the coolant crossover on the front of the intake:

AH HA!!!! Vader, you ROCK. Some ~genius~ mech had the brilliant idea of covering it with a wire guard all the way up to the block. It looked identical to the coolant hoses... Till I tugged on it!

I owe you one! Thanks!

See, this is the reason I have that line in my sig...

Sensor is not equal to Sender is not equal to Switch

The passenger side head contains a fan switch. It's a coolant temperature controlled switch that turns on and off the fan relay.

The driver's side head contains a coolant temperature sender, which sends the temperature to the dash gauge. And the intake manifold contains the coolant temperature sensor which is the ECM's sense of coolant temp.

Okay [/soapbox].. :hail: me.. <- just kidding

Well, I got the POS replaced, and I'd like to say to all who told me "20 min job..." 20 MIN JOB MY FLYING RAT'S A$$!! I had to remove the alternator, the intake ducting, a cooling hose, another coolant-sensor-like-thing (spilled coolant from that), and then get a 2 foot breaker bar to get it off.

Total time: 3 hrs. But, it runs better now. Now all I have to do is figure out which part is making the fuel smell, and where the coolant pressure leak is from (near the cap, but I replaced that...)

What is that sensor-thing just to the left of it?

on pre-89 cars, it is used for the cold start injector.(CSI Sensor)

You did that on purpose didn't you? It's a cold-start switch!!! It turns the 9th injector on and off, it doesn't
provide any kind of feedback for the ECM at all.

89irocZ23: yeah it went fine. i'll be on AIM again eventually, just gotta get a hub so I can get in on this DSL action..

What would the symptoms of a fried one be?

Immediate dying on cold start unless a bit of throttle is used (warms up enough for clear running in 5 sec)? Hmmm...

Well, I'm going to do the EGR and PCV valves next weekend, plus the EVAP filter. Then comes the fuel filter and line check. Then the plugs. Then I start on the interior!

Actually, it's a Cold Start Control. It provides a varying duration signal to operate the cold start injector based on coolant temperature, as well as anothber dedlay timer to prevent rapid cycling of the CSI on subsequent start arttempts (to prevent flooding). It is a little more than just a hard contact switch, like the fan switch.

And your move went very well, I would say, since I didn't have to help... I'll get enough of that myyself, soon enough:

Right. It's only powered during crank and while the coolant is less than 180º. It also has an internal heater that shuts it off after 8 seconds.

Yeah have fun there, Vader... I hate packing and moving. Apparently, my friends do too because they sure didn't help much.
