I called CompCams and the tech recommended this cam to me.
Do you think it would add any power, or is it more or less a stock replacement?
Thanks guys.. I can;t seem to make my mind up on what cam I want to buy??? AHHHHH

Oh to achieve that 400hp all the parts had to work in unison. So if you're planning on getting 400hp, then you have to change all those parts at once, not just one here and there. It's not going to run right if you stuff a huge cam into that stock L03.
That's what I was thinking iroc22..
In another post, someone recommended a Comp Cams Extreme Energy 262..
Any thoughts on this cam?
What all has to be changed when I swap this cam in?
besides lifters.. those will be swapped regardless
Thanks

well i would change it all at once. i mainly put that up there b/c mosdt ppl do juss dump the 305 altogether going in for a 350. That gets annoying to hear, "i juss pulled the 305 and paid 3 g's for a crate 350" when they juss threw away a perfectly good motor.

Forget that article, it's not exactly what I would call scientific or professional, it's just somebody's opinion...
The shortcomings of the L03, in order of importance, are: the exhaust, all the way from the heads to the street; the breather; the cam; and the heads. Additionally, the car has a serious shortcoming, in its gear. Attack the problem in that order rather than just fooling around with the easy to get to stuff up on top that looks sexy when you replace it with chrome, and don't expect one single mod to be a magic bullet (especially the cam!!!). It won't happen.
First, get a set of application-specific headers, and a cat, and a cat-back. DON'T get any piece whatsoever that will bolt to a L03. Instead, get something like the ones for a 88 TPI 350. Without that, nothing else you do will matter.
Next, get a L69 air cleaner. That's the dual-snorkel cold-air one. Or, make your own dual-snorkel cold-air setup. DON'T put an open element one on there; you will give away a good 10 HP just from the hot under-hood air, compared to cold air. Ignore what people say about their car "feeling" faster; the intake noise recalibrates the butt dyno. An open element may be faster than stock but will be way less than what the correct breather will provide.
Then, replace the cam. Don't use a flat-tappet one. I'd recommend the Comp 08-302-8, along with the springs & timing chain to go with it. A set of their 1.5 roller-tip cast steel ball fulcrum rockers would be a good addition too.
After all this, you should have gained at least 40 HP over stock, maybe more. That's as far as you'll be able go with the heads that are on there. To get another 20 or so cheap and easy HP, get a set of 081 castings from a 305 TPI or a 87 L69 (Monte Carlo SS).
For gears, go to the junkyard and get the entire rear out of a 90-92 6-cylinder 5-speed car, which will have 3.42 gears and 28-spline axles; and put the SLP posi in it.
You won't believe the difference in your car after you do this to it. You'll get even more out of it if you learn to burn your own proms, which will unlock even more power from improved fuel and timing curves.

Let me get this straight.. if I call the junkyard and ask for a 90-92 camaro v6 with a 5 speed, all of them had the 3.42 rearend?
I don't want to get stuck with a rearend that I can't use.

Do not call the junkyard. If you call them on the phone and ask for that, what they will actually do is go to their shelf where they have ones already out of cars and find a rear end that fits a 90-92 etc., not necessarily one out of the exact kind of car you want. You could end up with almost anything, but the odds are about 4 to 1 you'll get a 82-89 one out of a 6-cyl auto car, which will be 26 spline axles (which means the SLP posi won't work) and probably a 3.23 gear instead of a 3.42.
Just go to the yard yourself and look around. When you find a 90-92 6-cyl 5-speed car, go get them to take that particular rear end out of that particular car, not just grab one off the shelf. They might charge you $10 extra or so, definitely worth it to get the exact thing you want instead of whatever they feel like giving you because it's easier for them. If you don't see one of htose cars, go home and come back next week, and the week after, and the week after that, until you spot one. Don't get in too much of a hurry. And of course, if you have any doubt at all about what gears are in a rear end, pop the cover off and look; but don't tell them that's why you're looking. Tell them you are making sure the gear is in good shape. The ratio is stamped on the edge of the ring gear, so you can tell in a matter of seconds whether it's what you want. If it's not, tell them you don't like what you see, and leave it there. You're under no obligation to buy it.

I went with a compromise, open element top, snorkel base. I get the best of both worlds, and with removing my rubber cowl stip on the back of the hood, the hot air expels itself from under the hood.
I have an open element, and I felt an instant gain in throttle response when I swapped out my factory air filter..
I just got a s/s/ hood for my car, so I'm going to make a ram-air setup to the open element hopefully..
Thanks

how much of a gain would TPI heads of 305 HO heads give over stock? or would aftermarket be the best bet. I can get a set of tpi heads for 100 bucks or a set of s/r tourquer 305's for over 600. i think we all know whats the better deal but would the TPI heads be woorth it?
305 HO and 305 TPI heads are the same casting '416' up to 86. 87-92 305 TPI heads are a different story, they're basically the same design only centerbolt. If you port the 416 castings you can get a lot of power outta them. F-BIRD 88 did it, and he has the flow #'s.
350 TPI heads are a similar head to the 081's, cept they are 64cc and their runners differ slightly.

Heads are not "roller". Yes they will work with a roller cam no matter what heads they are.
081 heads are used on the last few L69 motors (the HO motor) in Monte Carlo SS, as well as on 305 TPI, with the 87-up intake pattern and center-bolt valve covers. Similarly, 416 heads were used on both TPI 305s and carbed ones, from 86 back.

stock L03 + open element I noticed an increase in throttle response instantly, but i also noted when i wasnt moving for a while (traffic) then stepped on it I noticed a sluggish out-of-the-hole car where my quick low-end torque used to be.
So, I just had to fix this. what did I do? solution:
took off the hood, (wait there more) put it on my OTHER car. Cut a hole in it for the blower (woo hoo custom blower-hood!) took cowl hood off THAT car... put it on my stock L03!! wee now i have a mis-matched (red) cowl hood on my black RS 89 camaro! but it did wonders! i must have gained 5 horsepower gee what a gain! just for a hood! and no more sluggish traffic torque from the open element. next comes the blower!
