$5000 to spend on new motor!!
Ok well you guys have not heard from me in a while. I sold my old engine and am ready to buy a new one. Should I get a longblock crate motor, turn key or build from scratch? I want either a 383 stroker, 350 with a blower or a small block 400. What do i need to make my car run 11s without nitrous? Can anyone give me a combo, suggestions or places to buy an engine. I am from Mass and would like to get it local. I plan on putting in 411 gears for my 9 bolt borg warner and a new stall converter for my 700R4 tranny. I have $5000 for the engine alone. PS I want to use my carb, distributor and MSD 6+ with this engine. See sig. Thanks
That 650 double pumper will be a little small for what you want to do. I'd forget about building an 11 second motor around it and start with a plan to choose parts that will work together to acheive your goal. I think a 383 with a blower would be nice.
I don't know how long the trans and rear will agree with that though.
I don't know how long the trans and rear will agree with that though. Im gonna do the rear end and stall converter right away but keep the 700 R4. What kind of blower can I use for the 383. I do not want to cut a whole in my hood. I have a small cowl about 3". How are the weiand 177 blowers. Theres a polished one for sale for 1800?
Scratch the blower , buy a stout 383 shortblock for about 1300-1500 dollars , get a set of afr heads and a roller cam with enough duration and overlap to kill small plants upon startup. Use a single plane with a holley 750 DP and you will be happey with a little money left over.
If you are set on using a blower, and dont want a hole, use a vortec or procharger setup. On a good 350 or 383(forged pistons, good crank and rods) with afr or brodix heads, you will easily make enough hp to run 11's. Gonna need a bigger carb, and prolly a new rear end, as you will frag the one you have. Moser has a sweet bolt in 12 bolt for a 3rd gen. Just ask procharger about compression and cam selection. Should be a fun project.

I'm too nervous to buy off ebay. As far as the Moser 12 bolt, how does that work? I have a borg warner 9 bolt, does it replace the whole unit or do i need a complete rear end? Where can I buy it and how much? Thanks. Any ideas on where to get a good shorblock 383 - reputable cmpany? This was my option #2
Moser engineering. They sell a complete bolt in 12 bolt for alot of vehicles, 3rd gen included. Im guessing its not cheap, but they do very good work. He does axles and gears and whatnot for prostock apps, and his products are first quality. The website is www.moserengineering.com and the phone is 260-726-6689.
that engine on ebay is only 2 bolt main, you would want a 4 bolt main i would think.. are you going with fuel injection or a carb?
if i had 5 grand i would do a 383 with a supercharger, or get a big block.

I am running a carb. Where can i get a 383 with a blower for 5 grand? I do not want to cut a hole in my hood, because I drive the car on the streets. I want to get the engine asap and I spend hours trying to find a place to buy it. I am thinking about getting a shortblock 383 and then getting AFR heads and a cam with a huge lift. I plan on adding 300HP nitrous boost from NX. Have any suggestions on where to get a good cheap 383 shortblock?
I would seriously look at a procharger. you can make very serious power with 1, and its not like a 6-71, you mount it to the side of the engine, and run it with a belt, its not mounted on top. Can use low hood, with no clearance issues. Alot of the rustang guys run them, and run very fast. If your gonna spray 300 worth of nitrous, you're probably gonna spend more than 5000 on an engine that wont destroy itself if you use that much on a regular basis. Good and cheap are 2 words that dont usually go together when buying engine parts. Just my .02
I recently recieved a set of Vortec heads from Wheeler Motorsports for a 383 I have and I was very pleased.
Upon doing business with Wheeler, I discussed with them at length doing a 383 Canfield headed crate with a small roller setup in the engine. They quoted me $4,795 and free freight for a dyno tested and dyno tuned 4 bolt 383 that would produce 460HP! It had all kinds of good parts in it and race quality machining-with a warranty. If it is anything like the heads, I bet it is real good.
I have heard real good things about Wheeler and know some circle track guys that use Wheeler engines.
It might be worth a phone call. Their # 888-389-4414
