Starter Grinding but not turning engine Over???

Just like the title says, I turn the key the starter gear pops out, engages with the flywheel but can't turn the flywheel and just makes a clicking noise from the starter. What could be causing this? A bad battery or something else? Thanks for the help.

low battery or a bad starter. you ought to trouble shoot it a little more and see what your battery has and what's getting to the starter.

Your question needs a little clarification---

is the starter actually engaging and not turning the motor

or is it not engaging the ring gear fully and grinding against the edge

both cases you should get a new starter (they are cheap) but the fix is different.

if the starter engages then doesnt have the juice to turn the motor check the wiring and the timing (too much advance can cause this)

if the starter was grinding you need to shim the starter correctly as this was not done with your current starter and thats why it grinds. if you have had this problem for long enough you can actually grind some of the ring gear off in which case youll need a new flywheel/flexplate because the old one will be unbalanced.

good luck

James
