lt1 cam in Goodwrench 305
Hi,
I am a new member to the board and have a few questions to ask. First off, I bought a 1985 camaro z28 a few months ago for 1,000 dollars and since then I have wanted to mod it. A couple years before I bought it, the guy had replaced the original motor with a 1993 Goodwrench 305 crate motor. Now that time has passed and money has built up i was wanting to do a couple mods and maybe get it running high 14's low 15's in the 1/4 mile. I found a slightly used lt1 cam out of a 1994 z28 on the net for 30 bucks and was wanting to install it. My questions are what do i need to do to install the cam. Do i need to replace the valve springs, retainers, and seals? How would i go about doing this? Where could i find a set cheap and what tools would i need to purchase? What are the stock horsepower specs on the Goodwrench 305? Would it be a better cam than the one in it?
I have just recently installed a set of headers also and still have a craving for more hp
. Any help would be greatly appreciated
- Craig

i wouldn't buy a used cam. if you do replace the springs with ones to match the cam and trash the factory rotaotrs and go with aftermarket retainers. no idea what tools you have so hard to guess at what you need. basic hand tools, air and valve spring compresor if you leave the heads on the engine.

GM performance products has the cam part # 14097395 priced at around 150.00 the cam is listed as the 383 truck cam but G.M. uses this cam in the Ram Jet 350Hp engine. It will work good with the stock heads and you can still use the stock lifters. The new to used cam diffrence in price is worth the price in the amount of

90Formula-X-F,would that cam work good in a 1990 350 TPI ? I checked it out at the GM website and it says it has a 109 lobe seperation,I thought that was too low for a stock computer and it would not run good at idle.I know nothing about cams, just what I have read,I am trying to find a decent cam that I can still use my stock springs and lifters with.So far all I have found is the Crane #104224 270/276 lift .452/.456 , I think the lobe sep. is 112.This cam sounds fine, but it is $260 as where the GM one is $150.

Let me get back to you later in the week... My 90 is M.A.P. as is yours and that's where a lope in the idle could cause problems where a Mass air system would idle better. I believe it will be ok . I just rebuild a 350 that's going in now and this was my cam choice after lotsa research. hope I was right..

Beef, I don't know which cam you're referring to, but: 1) none of the part #'s people mentioned are the old '70's LT-1 cam, they are all '87-later type roller hydraulic lifter cams; and 2) the '70's LT-1 cam was a flat, solid lifter design.
I've got a really dumb question, though: Is a 1993 Goodwrench 305 crate engine roller lifter? I know '87-later 3rd gen engines were roller, but '87-later crate doesn't guarentee anything. The base 350 Goodwrench engine, for instance, is flat tappet, two-piece rear main seal.
I'd sure want to know that before I started a cam swap.

Re: the 383 cam: the LSA is 112. Believe the 109 is the intake lobe center. It's the same LSA as your stock cam so it ought to work just fine. I'm waiting for mine to arrive. $133.21 from Victor George Oldsmobile in Flint, MI and GMPP on-line. Can use stock springs or order the set for the 300/350 which will fit the 305 heads with no milling. Good luck!

As for the crate engine, that's a great question..I had been under the impression that all GM V8s after 87 were roller's,but from time to time I hear stories contradicting that.

Sorry,
The LT1 cam that went in the 96 Z28 and Trans Am/Formula has an LSA of 117.......
If you search I'll bet you can't come up with one that has an LSA of 109 which was my point....
