How to run low 14's with a 305???
Im looking to rebuild the old 305 here pretty soon. Im running high 14's with it now. It is an LG4 in an 83 T/A. All I have done to it is edelbrock headers and y-pipe, and 3" all the way back to a flowmaster, 3.73's, and bumped timing. My best is 14.92 @91mph. What would it take to run consistent low 14's with the wee-05? I would like suggestions on compression, cam, head work, intake manifold, and stall speed. I need to keep the CC Q-Jet, and all the emissions equipment. Also, please dont tell me to get a 350. I know $/hp it makes more sense...but I want to keep the 305. But please, help me out here. THX

vortec heads, comp cams 268EX, edelbrock vortec performer intake, can you say high 13's?
all that will prolly run you about $1200 as long as you install it all yourself

You don't need high compression or vortec heads to run low 14's in a 305. Heck, you don't even need good heads!! My girlfriends camaro runs low 14's @98MPH with BONE STOCK L03 swirl heads. Here's the secret: Comp Extreme 262 cam, RPM intake, Edle. 600cfm carb, headers, full 3inch exhaust, 3.42 gears, TH350 tranny and man thats it. Her car is amazingly fast for a 305 considering its got stock **** heads, stock converter and a HEAVY car (at least compared to my firebird.......her car has everything, AC, power everything, back seats, ect...). I would imagine to say that if you put some ported and possibly shaved 416 305 heads on your 305, stabbed in a comp 262 cam, rpm intake and good carb, with your 3.73 gears you be good for 13's easy. I was going to go this route but instead I scored a like new low mileage 350 block that I'm going to put the ported 305 heads on as well as a nice 11inch B@M converter.

See my sig. I'm not quite there, even corrected, because of lack of gears and tranny issues (won't shift from 2-3 at WOT).
I'd recommend the World heads, but they really need to be cleaned up in the bowl area. They are easy to port, though. Stock heads can be ported, but will still need screw-in studs, 1.94" intake valves, and upgraded valve springs. The Worlds also have a revised combustion chamber, which is supposed to make them work better.
The one problem you'll have with an '83 LG4 is the fact that it was low compression - dished pistons, no knock sensor. It'll still respond to the mods, but not as well. New, flat-top pistons are possible, but it will add to the cost. Polished chambers should reduce the need for a knock sensor.
Are you sure this is an LG4? Those times are pretty impressive if those are the only mods you've done.

yeah, its an LG4 for sure. When I rebuild it, im gonna go with around 9.5 to 10.1 pistons. I was told the XE256 was a good cam for the wee-05 and the XE262 was a little large for the CC Q-jet. I was thinking around a 2000 stall. Does that sound ok? Maybe clean up the stock heads a little bit. I really appreciate the ideas, but can you tell me if im on the right track? Thanks again.

We have a port and polish session for 305s going on this board right now. F-Bird'88 is a pro and gets his heads to flow at 95% of the Vortecs, so you can rest assured that when done right, the 305 heads will even keep a built up 400 happy

Not everyone can afford aftermarket high dollar heads and flat top pistons. If you can make 10:1 with 305 heads that flow decent #'s, then WHY NOT??? Last edited by ChrisFormula355; Jul 1, 2002 at 09:18 PM.

Like I said, it is Comp's recommendations. But I live in a place where it hits -35* every winter, so lumpy cams don't do me much good

Had to sleep on this one...The performance head has got to be one of the most technical part of an engine. and the hardest to understand. Ive been doing alot of reserch, and there sure are alot of variables, but one thing seems consistant when it comes to performance....a good machinest can make a slow part fast.
Ive worked on Alot of stock motors, I'm pretty good at trouble shooting, (carbed systems). But when it comes to performance engines, I'm just a beginner...so lighten up and allow me to learn.
(ChrisFormula355).
Now my vacation is over and I have to go back to work(after neck surgery) Hope you guys dont miss me too much.....I work in a precast concrete plant...no computers there, guess I wouldnt get much done if there were. Anyway, this board has really helped me through 9wks of boredom and I want to thank you guys for that. Have a great week.
P.S. I still think 305's suck!!!!
