timing light instructions needed

I need help using this timing light. It is not the dial kind. It just has 2 alligator type clips(red and black). And it has one that says spark plug with an arrow. I guess you put this on the #1 spark plug, but which way should the arrow face? Also, what do I connect the red&black clips too? Any other information on using the light would be greatly appreciated, as this is my first time using one.

Thanks,
brett

Shouldn't matter which way the arrow faces (that I know of), just put it on the plug wire. And the other goes to the battery terminals.

Mark,-or anyone

It goes on the plug wire, or the plug itself??

I am a little confused as to how it works by just putting it on the wire.

thanks,
brett

It goes on just the wire. Electricity still conducts through the wire.

the arrow on the clip should be on the plug side of the #1 plug wire and the red wire to the + and the black to the - sides of the battery.

cool,

so I still hook up the wire to the plug. Makes a little more sense now.

Is there any way to tell if the engine "WANTS" to be advanced more. For example what kind of sound will it be making (if any) if it wanted to be advanced more, or was advanced too much, etc.

Thanks for the help.

Brett

cool, thanks,

one last thing(hopefully).

vacuum advance line is unplugged from dist. and plugged right?

And, if you know off hand, which way do you turn the dist. to advance?(clockwise or counter?)

I can just check once I start if you aren't sure, but thought I would ask since I am posting anyway.

Thanks again

I feel like saying turn it clockwise to advance, but I'm not sure about that. Just hook up the light and spin it a little bit to get a reading, then you'll know for sure.
