Finally got a good lead on my problem, now help me pinpoint and fix it

Ok well I've traced the problem to be in the tranny torque converter via some adjustments to my TV and throttle cables. Here is the story:

Taking Morley's advice I was going to adjust the tv cable again, however from the onset I couldn't get it tight enough for it to self-adjust itself. I was also having a problem with the throttle not opening the blades all the way when I floored it. So what I did was use some lock washers to shim up the throttle cable (take up the slack) at the pedal. (By the way suggestions for a better fix to this than lock washers would be greatly appreciated, I have a feeling they are going to fall off.)

Once the slack was taken up I was able to move the tv cable housing back all the way and get it to click once or twice when I pushed the pedal to the floor.
After this I reset the TPS voltage to the correct .54 volts.
I went for a drive and my problem was worse!! I'm not happy that it was worse, but atleast now I know where the problem lays.
Someone please tell me what can be happening here. Is there a problem with my valve body?? Is the computer chip causing lockup problems with the converter?? Any other suggestions??

One more thing I should mention that might be very important to this story. Back in March I had to replace the rear main seal on my engine and when I pulled the transmission I forgot to disconnect the tv cable. The plastic piece on the end that bolts onto the tranny broke and the cable pulled out. I assumed it was ok though because there was still tension on the little lever that the cable attaches to. (It still pulls back after you pull it up) Is it possible that I screwed something up when that happened?? If so how hard and how long would it be to fix something like that?? Does just the valve body have to come back out??

Hey, Paul,

Be very careful. If the throttle cable is stretching to the point of needing shim, it may be failing. If it is unwinding in the housing, it could possibly stick on you. That wouldn't be good in the open position.

Regardless of the throttle cable, the TPS shouldn't have needed readjustment unless the cable was holding the throttle open slightly. Again, that points to a failing cable or sticking throttle shaft. If the throttle body is moving freely with teh cable disconnected, I'd start hunting for a cable soon. Once that is all back to spec, the TV cable adjustment may be much easier.

Even if that doesn't solve all your problems, the fact that the TPS was out of adjustment after shimming the cable isn't a good thing. You may want to reset the minimum air position to check your work.

If you broke the housing to the TV cable down at the transmission it may be the root of all your problems. The cable housing has to be anchored to the trans, otherwise the cable housing will be moving instead of the cable. I'd suggest getting a new TV cable and start the adjustment process all over again.

As far as the throttle cable slop at the pedal, there is usually some slop there, it shouldn't be like a piano wire.

Ok well I already installed a new TV cable when I broke the old one. As far as the throttle cable needing to be shimmed. There was like a half inch play or so in the cable before the pedal actually started throttle actuation. I didn't make it piano string tight, but shimmed it enough to allow the blades to open fully now. The TPS only needed a minor adjustment and could have been from the screws being slightly loose from the last time I set it.
I don't know if replacing the throttle cable will help my problem at all right?? If not then I'm not going to replace it until I get a slight hint of trouble. I think it may be more a factor of having added the SuperRam because I don't remember having that much slack in my old setup.

Come on everyone don't let me down when I need your help the most.

I ordered a new throttle cable today since it was only like $20. I will put that in tomorrow night and reset the tv cable again.
I talked to my tranny builder today and he also told me to try disconnecting the electrical plug that goes into the tranny lockup solenoid, however I don't know if this will help if my old chip still gives me the same problem??

Finally he told me to put a gauge on the tranny and monitor it's pressure when it shifts if the other 2 ideas don't work. Does anyone know what the pressure readings should be for an 89 IROC with a 350 TPI and 700R4?
