Which water pump for high performance

I want a polished or chrome water pump for my new engine. Which is the best for the price? Will summit's work? Also are the electric ones a better choice? See sig

As far as polished or chrome, I have no idea. That's not performance.

For high performance, get one from Stewart.

I'm a little confused by the question. What do you mean by "performance"? Are you looking for more engine performance, or better pump performance?

A pump that moves a lot of coolant at higher pressure differentials will usually take more power to turn (less engine performance). A pump that takes less power to turn will usually provide poorer cooling system performance (and eventually less engine performance).

Care to define?

I want better cooling performance. Basically one that will be ble to keep my engine running at a cool temperature but at the same time not costing tons of money. The biggest bang for the buck.

main improvements are a better impeller to reduce cavitation

It can be installed on a factory pump really. But, stewart, weiand and edelbrock (vic-jr) provide them from the dealer.

Stewarts hands down is the best. I won't even touch any of the other pumps just because of their lack of technical support. Stewarts can offer better pumps for less and still have money for R&D should tell you something.

The two pumps I wouldn't use on the streets, are a chrome or electric water pump...
Chrome is not good with heat, and an electric will not increase as rpm increases, and is a hudge drag at criuse rpms...

You can get a polished or brushed/bare aluminium, or you can paint a stock unit. Some of that newer anodized paint look pretty neat...
If you want increased cooling, for the price an overdrive pulley might be the ticket...(I have March pulley on mine)

Daily driver or toy?, assuming toy.

I've got a electric Proform cheapy $129-$149 depending on where you look and it's going on it's 4th year without a hiccup. Absolutly NO cooling issues at at, but I also have a 31x19 aluminum radiator to back it up. Hottest I get in dead of summer in traffic 180*, but gauge spends 90% of it's time on 150*. That's freeway driving, in town, racing, etc....

We're running a CSI (now CSR) on the truck I race with a comparable motor to mine, smaller aluminum radiator (S-10) and it has trouble keeping it's cool...bad part of the deal....it's track only.

Proform is a knock off of Meizere, so if you have to have the name brand go with them.

Re: Which water pump for high performance

I bought one from Stewart Components earlier this year. It started weeping coolant after only a couple of hundred miles.

Definitely would not buy another one or recommend anyone else buy one.

Re: Which water pump for high performance

7 year old thread... But at least you searched!

For a stock engine, a stock replacement pump is sufficient, and if you buy it through your local auto parts store, it will most likely come with a warranty.

yea this is an old post, but just to add to it. The Horse Power Tv guys did a Lean Mean Green 91-92 Camaro build up and used a electric water pump for a daily driver.

Not that i really take anything they air on TV or publish in these car rags with any merit or seriousness that i'd make apersonal decsion based on what "they say" I would have to agree based on the exellent luck i've had over the years running the same proform electric water pump.

Re: Which water pump for high performance

Make this thread live for ever,
So now here we are in 2k15, I have done some reading on other threads and it is the usual 50/50 split camps electric, not electric blah blah. My question is that I have seen some blurbs about the "High volume" pumps such as the edelbrock vic-jr aluminum ones actually being detrimental to your cooling efforts because it pushes the coolant out of the radiator before the air has a chance to "wick" it away. so have we come full circle to a stock volume iron or aluminum pump being the ticket? maybe that is why so many have had weld strength issues in the aftermarket radiators, over pressurizing the system... but I digress. how do you all feel about something like the TuffStuff 1449NAREV or the GMB 130-1620 as found at summit?

I am making the jump from 350 to 383 and from all my reading on here it almost sound like the factory system (water pump and radiator/dual fans) with the dual fan relay kit is the way to go.

and i searched for this gem, and just noticed we arent in the Cooling section... odd
