Is This A Bad Idea?? Heater Box??

Since I have a daily driver now, I don't have to drive the IROC. In fact in the fall I'll be takin the Stang up to college. So the IROC won't get driven until maybe December if at all. Then for the Spring semester I'll have the Stang back at college. So the IROC won't see cold weather, so I shouldn't need the heater box right? Right now I don't have money to even buy a S10 box from a junkyard. And I'd really like to clean up some clutter in the engine bay, I have to fix an exhaust leak, I think it's the pass side header gasket. Which the heater box now makes it a little difficult. So, would it be a bad idea just to take the whole thing out and put some sheet metal there for now? Just an idea.

The only real problem I see, is if your winshield fogs up.

That's my concern, but I would think that they wouldn't fog up, unless it's raining out and I have the windows up. But I don't really drive the car in the rain now, unless the Stang acts up. Which right now it is, I have to replace the alt. But I'm goin to get a ride to the auto store later, so now I'm not even drivin the IROC. Decisions, decisions.

Also, if I remove it, are there bolts inside the car that I have to get.

Mark,

I just went through the same thing, check out this post https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=114765

It is a pain in the @ss to take it all out, I ended up taking the dash most of the way apart to do it. But in the end I am happy with the results, just gotta see if it works to keep the windows clear now.

what were you talking about doing with and s10 box ???

Some people get the heater box out of an S10 without AC.
Thanks for that link, it helped a lot. Um, I had thought of doing what you did sort of I guess. Cutting the AC box part out and keeping the blower motor, but would I be able to have the air get thru that hole in the firewall somehow, if maybe I have the sheet metal bent out some to allow air flow? Know what I'm talking about?
I am no where mechanically inclined enough to do what you did.:hail:

Thanks Mark, but what I did wasnt all that complicated, just alot of hacking and bangin, lol but thanks.

as far as your question goes, Im not really fimilar with how the A/C works in our cars as mine never had it (factory delete option) But IM sure it would be possible to concect some kind of duct from the A/C to what I did so that you could blow cold air. The only problem would be that with my setup it would only come out of the defrost vents because thats all I have left. Hope that helps.

I don't have AC anymore, so I just need the blower motor to blow air into the defrost bents. I can't block off the hole in the firewall where the AC was can I? Then no air will flow from the blower motor?

Ahh ok now I see what your sayin. I blocked it all off, but then I drilled a 3" hole through the fire wall for the air to flow through. The hole is behind the reshaped fan shroud. Through this hole is where the flex duct goes to hook up to the defrost vents. So if you want to block off the original hole you would have to rig something up like I did for the air to flow through. I will say one thing though, make sure you are mentaly ready before you go making big holes in your car, lol Its tough to do, but once you start theres no turning back.

Thats probably a good idea, I know once I got mine all taken out it took me a good day of thinking to decide exacly what I wanted to do with it.

Ive found them in Northern Tool, Harbor Freigh Tool, JC Whitney, and a few other catalogs, never actualy found one in a store though.

Good luck and dont get fustrated, just keep taking screws out and eventualy it will let go and come out, lol

check out my new post, I only had 2 bolts inside, and there was one bolt down below in the engine bay, closest to the block.
