Im pretty sure I blew up my tranny. I was gunning it and it made a real loud noise, and now it wont go into gear. My mustang friend is telling me that its better to put the same tranny back in (700r4) but I was thinking of getting of of those jegs turbo 350 deals. Any truth in this? And if I go with the th350 I would have to get a new converter correct?

I spoken to many guys that rebuid trannies, and I heard alot of them say when they tear into one of those catalog trannies there is usually pitted input shafts, gunk that was never removed, and all in all shoddy deal-they sell based on name brand publicity. Around here in my area it is by far cheaper to buy a junk 350 and have it rebuilt locally-just ask around with your buddies and I'm sure someone knows somebody. A race prepped TH350 with new sprag (A MUST) is $550. And yes you will need a different convertor.

not to mention a new torque arm, cross member, and resized drive shaft if im not mistaken. Probably cheaper overall to get another 700R4. I hear the pro-builts are very good, not to mention that dana, the builder, is a member of this board so customer service should be good. Im planning on getting one myself.

in that case ill prob go with the 700....Should a stock one be able to handle my 383? I mean my car has about 100 K miles , is this where the orig tranmissiosn usually gives? Or is it due to my engine.

Here's the break down for prices as mine will be set-up for drag racing
Race prepped th350 $550.00
4000stall $475.00
700r4 to 350 change over bracket $100
You use the same cross member and torque arm, you just need a longer drive shaft unless you have a 9" tailshaft on the 350
All the overdrive trannies I've ever priced start out around $15-1600 so either way it's gonna take some bucks

I got my 700-R4 rebuilt for $400 wih a shift kit + $100 for a converter. I am asuming you have TPI. If you put in a Turbo 350, what are you going to do about VSS, Park/Neutral switch, etc...

I paid $1300/with converter out the door for my 700 to be done at a local shop with a very good rep. I haven't had any problems to date and she gets driven hard. See sig.

Where did you have your 700r4 rebuilt at? That seems like a great deal. At what mileage did your tranny go out?
