no luck with this on the carb board....

i have a holley 4160, when i first start it in the morning it idles at 2000 and i have to goose the throttle to kick it down to 1200. after the car is warm and i accelerate past 1500 rpm while driving the engine speed wont go below 1500 again unless i goose the throttle and then it'll drop to 750. i want to idle at 1200 cold and 750 hot, what to do? the carb has an electric choke, if it makes a difference.

 

This REALLY belongs in the carburator forum.

The reason it's doig is that is because you have your idle screw set way too high. I'd say, back off about 1 and a half turns and then mess with the mixture screws on the side of the bowl.

 

i know, but i didn't get any responses on the carb board, not enough traffic

i thought the fast idle speed screw only controlled the fast idle speed and didn't control whether the fast idle was on or off?

 

sounds like your electric choke needs to be adjusted...

 

can you give specifics? i have the choke set so it has just enough preload to shut all the way with the engine cold.

 

Check the linkages and lube them as necessary.
Make sure the choke is actually drawing power to verify if the elec heater coil inside is working.

 

this happened to me once. check the throttle return spring sometimes if it gets streched it doesn't spring back together and it will keep the idle up.

 

i think i may have fixed it. i removed the choke housing and saw taht the fast idle cam developed burrs on it since it's plastic so i think it may have been getting hooked on the fast idle screw so i cut the burrs off, backed off teh fast idle screw and leaned out my choke a bit, i'll see what it's like in the morning after sitting all night. thanks for your help guys

 

Well I'm not talking about the fast idle screw, but the main (driver's side right unde the linkage) idle screw.

You need to get your hands on a maul. Not one of those little wood-splitting types, but a big old fat-*** railroad spike maul. Open the hood, remove your favorite air cleaner, and take your best Sammy Sosa-esque swing at that die casting that reads "Holley" on the front.



Either than, or get a replacement high idle cam, since the replacements are likely metal, not plastic.

 

thanks guys, and Vader, I'm just milking this carb til i get the lt1 intake on which is pretty soon i hope. turns out the problem was the throttle return spring wasn't pulling hard enough so i just rebent it so it's shorter and problem solved.
